Tracker – Preternatural – Review: A Supernatural Case Leads Colter to Confront his Past

Spoilers

Tonight’s episode of Tracker offered a haunting journey into rural Kentucky, where Colter’s search for missing teen, Emmaline Trace, brought viewers face-to-face with the mystery, folklore, and haunting landscapes of Prior, Kentucky. Opening on a beautifully eerie note, Emmaline wandered a quiet ravine area collecting herbs and talking to a snake— which she believed was an omen of dark times ahead. This foreboding set the tone for the episode as Colter dug deeper into the case, propelled by Velma’s own emotional connection to Emmaline’s troubled past, echoing her own childhood loss and struggle.

When Colter arrived in Prior, Jasper, Emmaline’s brother, revealed troubling local animosity. Emmaline and Jasper, recent transplants to Kentucky from Tennessee, had been marked by the locals as threats, with even the gruesome symbol of leaving dead animals on their doorstep. The tension was palpable as Colter uncovered layers of mistrust and dark secrets, from accusations of witchcraft to a cutthroat local drug operation.

The investigation quickly spiraled into a thrilling and dangerous rescue mission, as Colter found Emmaline held captive by a drug clan who took her because they believed that she could cure their sick elder. The stakes were raised to an extreme as Colter risked his life to free her, leading to an intense cat-and-mouse game through an abandoned store. This climaxed in a brutal confrontation, where Colter suffered a serious injury but somehow managed to survive, sparking a moment of vulnerability and self-reflection.

The character development and emotional resonance was strong in this episode as Velma and Colter’s personal histories surfaced in touching ways. Velma’s bond with Emmaline paralleled her own challenging childhood, creating a deeper emotional drive behind her determination to find her. Meanwhile, Colter recognized a connection between Emmaline and his own sister, Dory. To comfort Emmaline, he shared a childhood story about how Dory used to make potions and pretend to curse her brothers. His call to Dory at the episode’s end revealed just how much Emmaline’s story struck a chord with him. It’s clear Colter has a lot of healing to do within his family, and his cases seem to keep reminding him of that.

The moral ambiguity of Emmaline’s powers was another strong theme in the episode. Emmaline’s supposed healing abilities and her quick thinking in feigning a curse to escape captivity, lent her a fascinating complexity. Is she genuinely supernatural, or simply perceptive and resilient? This question left viewers to ponder the blurred line between mysticism and survival, and whether supernatural healing is truly real.

The episode was a fantastic example of how Tracker can blend action, suspense, and emotional depth in a single episode. The eerie ambiance, complex relationships, and mix of local lore with personal history elevated it beyond the typical crime thriller format. This episode subtly nudged Colter closer to confronting his own past, making it a satisfying, yet somber installment of the season. Fans of Tracker will undoubtedly appreciate the rich character work, suspenseful scenes, and the lingering sense of mystery around Emmaline’s “powers.” For viewers who enjoy a mix of rural gothic atmosphere and heartfelt detective work, this episode of Tracker delivered in full—both a thrilling chase and a haunting reflection on family, trauma, and the weight of unspoken histories.
