Despite appearing like she’s beaten the curse, Rachel dies in the final episode of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen.
Then, several minutes later, life comes back to her, and she continues as if she hadn’t been headed for six feet under.
That’s the moment Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen finally shows its hand and recontextualizes some of the early episodes.
That resurrection isn’t just a shock twist; it’s the key to understanding everything the show has been building toward and what the future could look like.
Rachel Didn’t Beat the Curse, She Reinforced Its Rules
By the time Rachel realizes Nicky isn’t her soulmate, it’s already too late.
Rachel tries to stop it by testing ancient theories or delaying the wedding.
But the curse doesn’t care about hesitation. It’s all about outcomes. And once the vows are said, the consequences start moving whether she’s ready or not.
The Curse, Explained Simply
The rules are established in Episode 4, when Rachel confronts the mysterious man.
The gist is: A bride once made a deal with death to bring her groom back. Death agreed, but with a condition, which is that everyone in her bloodline must marry their soulmate.
If they don’t? They die. Slowly, painfully, and inevitably.
And if someone refuses to follow through, the curse doesn’t disappear — it moves. It finds someone else and keeps going.
That’s what makes this show so effective as a horror show. There’s no escaping it, only passing it on.
The Man Who Tried to Break It
The mysterious man Rachel keeps seeing in her immediate environment is proof that the system punishes anyone who tries to step outside it, and Rachel will be punished for trying to cheat it.
He refused to marry his bride out of fear, effectively breaking the curse’s expected path.
He’s forced to stay alive and watch every marriage tied to her bloodline play out, over and over again, knowing exactly how it ends — decades of the same cycle, until it stops meaning anything.
Death stops becoming the biggest threat, and a life without meaning takes over. Pain means nothing, and suffering too.
Why Rachel Comes Back to Life
Rachel doesn’t beat the system; she comes back to life to enforce its rules by witnessing the next marriages.
As it did with The First Witness, death needs another one to seal the deal when vows are said, and then it can take over.
The man has done his duty diligently, trying to warn the couples before they commit, but knows very well it doesn’t matter.
When everyone in Nicky’s bloodline who is not with their soulmate dies during that doomed wedding, Death works backward and comes for Rachel of the Harkin bloodline, then for The First Witness, whose ancestor started all this.
It’s after that massacre that we learn two important truths: Nicky thought Rachel was his soulmate, and so did his brother Jules and his wife Nell.
Never has there been a worse way to learn where people stand with their partners. Death claims his mother, sister, cousins, and aunts, but leaves him intact.
He puts up a fight to save them, but his efforts are in vain. The damage was done long ago when he learned that the picture-perfect image his parents presented was a facade.
Like any couple, it wasn’t smooth sailing.
However, Death is now part of his bloodline, and it still needs a witness for the remaining Cunningham family member: Jude.
Who broke the rules? Rachel. Like the mysterious man, she is now tasked with the duty.
And since it’s Death that brings death, it can also bring someone to life. So it does.
“You have to be really, really careful who you choose to marry,” Rachel tells Jude in the final minutes of the season finale. By the end, she isn’t trying to understand anything anymore; she’s just here to witness.
It’s her turn, and the most she can do is warn someone. But does it matter really? Jude will either die or transfer the curse to someone else. Either outcome is a tragedy.
Jude might not fully understand what he witnessed. Time will blur it, people will rationalize it, and life will move on.
Rachel knows that, but she says it anyway.
The Ending Is Both Freedom and a Trap
Rachel’s ending initially appears to be freedom. She never has to worry about choosing the wrong person again. That part of her life is over.
But like people who enter marriages because it’s time to do it, she makes a trade-off for one of the best assets individuals have — choice.
It’s a double-edged sword, which makes Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen feel dark and pessimistic. Every choice demands something big.
And that’s what makes the ending land.
Because Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen isn’t really about death — it’s about choice. About that moment where you know something is wrong, and you choose to go through with it anyway.
The show spends a lot of time building mystery, but the ending makes its message pretty clear: choices have consequences.
And sometimes those consequences go beyond what anyone could have imagined.
There must be a lot of children who have now inherited the curse, and when they’re of age, Death will be waiting, and Rachel will be the witness.
When she embodies The First Witness, she submits to the curse and goes to live carefree until the next wedding.
