What Lies Ahead for the Skeldale Family in Season 7 of All Creatures Great and Small

It’s been a long and rather trying wait since Christmas, but we’re finally returning to the rolling Yorkshire Dales to reunite with our favorite TV family. All Creatures Great and Small is set to return with a brand-new season this September, and there is a good deal awaiting us in post-war Darrowby.

It is spring 1946 and, unlike in the Season 6 premiere, when Siegfried was the only person permanently living at Skeldale, the house is now full of life again. But while peace has returned to the world, life in Darrowby certainly has not grown quiet.

A new vet in town is about to shake up life at the Skeldale surgery. And though he seems to have rather a lot in common with a certain senior vet, we suspect Siegfried will be none too thrilled about his presence. Tristan, meanwhile, is rather impressed by their new colleague, while James starts to question his own abilities. And over at Heston Grange, Helen has new ideas for the future of the farm, though getting her father on board may prove rather tricky.

What many viewers might be most interested in, however, is where things stand between Siegfried and Skeldale’s very own fairy godmother, Audrey Hall. Season 6 spent much of its time reminding us just how indispensable Mrs Hall has become to Siegfried, gradually bringing the two closer together. The Christmas Special then took something of an unexpected and, for some viewers, not entirely welcome turn with the return of Dorothy, Mrs Hall’s best friend, with whom Siegfried had shared a brief kiss and exchanged a few postcards eons ago.

By the end of the Christmas Special, Dorothy and Siegfried had rekindled at least some of their old affection, with Audrey herself playing a rather significant part in it by encouraging the two to pursue each other. However, when she caught sight of the pair in an intimate moment towards the end of the episode, her reaction suggested that she might not be quite as comfortable with the prospect of them becoming a couple as her earlier encouragement had suggested. It was almost as though Audrey herself had not realised how she would feel about seeing Siegfried with another woman until she was actually confronted with it head-on.

It will therefore be interesting to see how Mrs Hall feels about this new situation now that some time has passed and where the close bond established so beautifully between her and Siegfried throughout Season 6 fits into the story going forward. According to the first Season 7 synopsis shared by Channel 5, Dorothy “seems to be having a positive effect on Siegfried,” while “Mrs Hall is enjoying having her friend around.” None of this is exactly hinting at the development many Siegfried and Mrs Hall fans might be hoping for, but perhaps things aren’t quite as straightforward as they first appear. After all, the word “seems” may be doing quite a bit of heavy lifting here.

For Season 7, all main cast members are set to return, once again brilliantly bringing our favorite characters to life: Anna Madeley as Mrs Hall, Rachel Shenton as Helen Herriot, Samuel West as Siegfried Farnon, Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot and Callum Woodhouse as Tristan Farnon.

They will be joined by several familiar faces, including Patricia Hodge as the beloved Mrs Pumphrey, Mollie Winnard as Maggie, Tony Pitts as Richard Alderson, Imogen Clawson as Jenny Alderson, Thomas Riches and Isabella Ward as our beloved Jimmy and Rosie Herriot, and Gaia Wise as Tristan’s posh lady friend, Charlotte Beauvoir. And, of course, the fantastic Maimie McCoy returns as Dorothy. Whatever viewers may make of Dorothy’s return, McCoy herself is clearly a joy to have around, something her fellow cast members have confirmed on several occasions.

We can also expect to see more of Helen again in Season 7, following Rachel Shenton’s reduced availability during the filming of Season 6 after welcoming a baby boy.

The new season of All Creatures Great and Small is set to premiere this September, with Channel 5 expected to announce the exact date in due course.
