Yes, Stabler Should Be Part of SVU Now — But Not the Way Everyone Thinks

- Advertisment -

Yes, Stabler should be part of Law & Order: SVU now that Organized Crime is done — but not in the most predictable way.

Lots of fans have been discussing how he could rejoin SVU after all of these years, but that simply wouldn’t work.

However, Stabler could have a strong SVU-related arc that keeps his character alive without making him the major focus of Law & Order: SVU.

There Are Both Logistical and Plot-Driven Reasons Stabler Can’t Rejoin SVU Full-Time

Let’s get this out of the way right now: Law & Order: SVU probably can’t afford to have Christopher Meloni rejoin the cast full-time, at least not without sacrificing other beloved characters.

Law & Order: SVU Season 27 had to severely cut Ice-T’s appearances because the show could not afford to keep both him and Kelli Giddish on full-time status.

So if Stabler does show up, it’s going to be on a recurring basis, no matter how frustrated that makes anyone.

But let’s talk plot. If Stabler’s going to show up at all, there has to be a compelling reason.

Searching for a Connection - Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 3 Episode 6
(Will Hart/NBC)

When he left the Special Victims Unit, Elliot Stabler was burned out after seeing a young girl shoot three people in the police station because she didn’t believe she’d ever get justice.

He hid in Italy for a decade, and as soon as he returned, his wife was killed, setting up his decision to join the Organized Crime Bureau.

Stabler’s PTSD is probably worse now than it was when he left, so it wouldn’t make sense for him to rejoin the Special Victims Unit.

Plus, Benson and Stabler were partners last time around, but now she is head of the unit.

That would be awkward for a billion reasons, including the fact that if Benson and Stabler were to get together romantically, her being his boss would lead to an uncomfortable power dynamic that would undermine Benson’s credibility as an advocate for sexual assault survivors.

Still, There Is a Reason for Stabler to Be In Benson’s World (And Not Just For Romance)

Law & Order: Organized Crime might be finished, but that doesn’t mean the Organized Crime Bureau has to cease to exist.

Stabler could join SVU in a joint investigation, which would also allow Bell and other members of the unit to reappear as guest stars if needed.

And the end of Law & Order: SVU Season 27 set up the perfect case for Stabler to help with.

Think about it: Chief Tynan covered up a bad shooting to protect a cop.

This is the kind of thing that would absolutely be on Stabler’s radar. Not only did his father do the same thing, but he busted a ring of corrupt cops related to that shooting.

If Stabler investigated, especially with the authority of his unit behind him, that would create an interesting conflict because Benson doesn’t want to ruin Tynan’s career.

She just wants the most annoying boss she’s ever had off her back.

But Stabler, and possibly Griffin, want justice.

So Stabler might have to investigate this case behind Benson’s back or against her wishes.

How’s that for a compelling storyline?
