Miles Franklin’s beloved novel My Brilliant Career is returning to the screen this August, this time as a series adaptation on Netflix. Published in 1901 and set in 1900 Australia, My Brilliant Career is one of the defining pieces of Australian literature from the 20th century, and it’s already been adapted as a film in the 1970s starring Judy Davis and the late Sam Neill. Now, The Newsreader‘s Philippa Northeast takes on the lead role of Sybylla Melvyn in this feminist coming-of-age story.
Northeast told Netflix why this adaptation and Sybylla are relevant today.
“There’s progression, but we are still seeing the reversal of women’s rights around the world today,” she said. “The questions Sybylla wrestles with, such as partnership, career, family, independence, are ones young women are still navigating daily. What makes Sybylla radical, even now, is the boldness of her choice. At a time when women couldn’t vote, and marriage was the only socially acceptable path, she chose herself. I couldn’t think of a braver way to live your life, to be absolutely fearless, determined, and to live life on your own terms.”

My Brilliant Career is an Australian production, but it’s getting a global release. Additionally, the streamer has launched a screenwriting competition to find a new great writer from Australia inspired by the series. Clearly, Netflix sees lots of potential in this adaptation.

Here’s the series description: “Sybylla is a shockingly modern young woman with one searing ambition — to be a writer, while her family is determined to marry her off. With an irrepressible taste for fun, Sybylla breaks every convention of 1900 Australia as she searches for a story that will allow her to write her way to independence. For her, the choice between adventure and marriage seems easy, until she falls in love. Will Sybylla marry, or will she risk it all for a creative life?”
Sybylla grew up in poverty but relative happiness and freedom with her large family in rural Australia. When she reaches a certain age, she goes to live with her incredibly wealthy grandmother (Mrs. Bossier, played by My Lady Jane‘s Anna Chancellor) on her Caddagat estate to get a chance at a better life. She meets wealthy neighbor Harry Beecham (Slow Horses‘ Christopher Chung) upon arrival, along with Frank Hawden (Jake Dunn), and they both become interested in her. While Sybylla is hellbent on becoming a successful writer, she can’t resist the urge to go on the adventure of falling in love.
Modern music in incorporated into the period piece, with special appearances from Australian singers whose music is featured in the show. The novel is adapted for television by Liz Doran. It was filmed on location in South Australia and at Adelaide Studios with support from the South Australia Film Corporation.
