Chuk Anyanwu Reacts to Week 4 Blindside, LaTrice’s Game Play & More

The fifth Houseguest to leave the Big Brother 28 house was Chuk Anyanwu. He was part of the eight-person Toolshed alliance and the five-person Red Corner alliance, but that wasn’t enough to save him.

After being on the wrong side of the vote in week four, the power shifted, and Chuk found himself on the block next to two of his Toolshed alliance members — Haley Thogmartin and Barrett Pfieffer. This was his first time on the block. Their ally Kamu Kirk won the Power of Veto and shocked his friends by not using it, leaving the nominations the same.

Haley won the Blockbuster, taking herself off the block. She was the only one to vote for Chuk to stay. He left in a nine-to-one vote. He told host Julie Chen Moonves that he was shocked that he was sitting in the chairs talking to her because he thought he had his alliance behind him, even though they blindsided him the previous week.

Chuk had only won one of the immunity competitions during the first night in the house. Although he looked like a physical threat with his muscular build, Chuk did not win competitions anymore after that.

Here’s what Chuk had to say about his time in the house.

How are you? 

Chuk: I’m doing OK. I was evicted, but hey, it’s all good.

You were evicted nine to one, with only Haley voting to keep you. Did any of the votes shock you?

Yeah, a few of the votes shocked me. But again, when you’re evicted pretty early on, a month in, the house is truly going to try and vote with each other, and they’re not trying to ruffle any feathers. One thing that did hurt me was the fact that, Yash [Patel] was a part of evicting me, but I knew Yash was making sure he was in it for his game. Again, only one person is going to win. I think Yash, out of everyone else there, was the one that truly hurt me because I thought he was still just going to stand on business because that’s kind of how he was in the house. It’s like I’m going to stand on business. No one’s going to sway my mind, and so that one was one of those that I’m like, “Come on, Yash.”

What was your initial reaction to the blindside last week with Lyric?

That completely shocked me and baffled me because this was the easiest eviction ever. This was truly so easy, right? Drew was originally our target. We switched it to Melody [Morris]. “Melody was a person who has to go home. Everyone knows that. Let’s get Melody out of here, right?”And the fact that it was such an easy eviction, and we felt that this should be smooth. Everyone knows what to do. That completely shocked me because it let me know that people in my alliance have already switched and are already looking inward.

Do you know who the other two votes were to keep Lyric besides you?

Of course, it had to have been Yash, and then I’m uncertain about that other one because I’m now finding out new information about Kamu that I’m a little worried like how do I not? It’s like you think you have a read on people, and then you don’t when you’re in the house. And I don’t know that last one, right? I know Yash was really adamant about keeping Lyric [Medeiros] in the house. Lyric was my girl. I told everyone, don’t even question me about that. That last one, Kamu keeps saying that it was him, but I’m uncertain.

It was Kamu.

Let’s go! At least he was honest about that. Okay.

But then this week, he won the veto and didn’t use it on you. Did you know then that the alliance was done?

Yeah. The minute Kamu didn’t use it on me, I’m not stupid. I wasn’t born yesterday. I knew he was siding more now with the icons, right? I’m sure he most likely thought he could go farther in the game with the icons versus maybe me and Haley, the people who he started as a trio with. We started at trio together. So the minute he didn’t use it on me, and he wouldn’t want to risk [Rick] Devens or Dee [Valladares] being a renom. It told me everything. When someone says that, it’s like, “Wait, what about us? Wouldn’t you risk Devens or Dee going home other than us?” You can go through so many different angles at it that he would kind of go at and make the schpiel all nice. But I knew.

You said LaTrice [Verrett] wasn’t playing a good game, but you went home on her HOH. Do you still stand by that? 

Hey, I still stand by that. When you’re in the house, and you see the way people are playing the game, and you’re seeing social things, Lala was not in any conversation. Throughout the house, she does not come to any conversation to understand, “Okay, where is this person at? How do you feel about this person?” She and I essentially never talked game, and everyone you spoke with, they said the exact same thing. They never spoke game with Lala, and during the tea party, she was so adamant about everyone having a true circle and how to play this game. So I still am adamant and stand on that. It wasn’t until right before she was going to list who was going to be on the block that I feel like she got new information. And after noms, I realized it was true. She did get new information. I knew it was from someone in our party.

You sort of isolated yourself with Haley all week instead of campaigning? Why was that?

Oh, because I knew people’s minds were made up, and I knew if people wanted to use me as a shield, they’re going to do that. And I knew someone in my previous Red Corner had so much influence in the house, and I knew it definitely had to have been one of the icons to kind of change everyone’s mind, and I knew once we got Rome [Seymour] out, once we got Jason [de Puy] out, the efforts were going to start switching now to me and Haley. And Haley went through such a tough time. She went through a tougher time emotionally with just the people being mean in the house to her, rather than me. People were just really distant from me since I was on the block, so I wanted to be there first. She’s my best friend. She’s a close friend in the house. You don’t really have many of those, right? When you do have that in the house, I wanted to grab onto that and be there for her. So I still am okay with the fact that we isolated ourselves that last week, and it was just brutal. That last week was brutal, truly.
