Those running Doctor Who are still on the hunt for the 14th Doctor. Now it appears as though there’s a chance they’ve actually landed on the actor that is going to be piloting the Tardis next.
The latest set of rumors comes from the British publication, The Mirror.
The publication pointed to a TV Insider who claims they have the inside scoop. Of course, that rumor might be hard to believe for some who have watched and loved the show for as long as they have.
14th Doctor Who Might Be Well Known
The insider claimed the next actor to step into the character’s shoes might be none other than Hugh Grant.
The rationale behind that is that showrunners are looking to get the 61-year-old actor aboard to “bring a fresh feel” to the long-running sci-fi series.
This insider added that Grant “offers many attributes – great actor, British, award-winning, Hollywood A-lister and excellent at comedy.”
They did add that things are not official. Instead, “conversations are in progress.”
The BBC has declined to comment on the rumor. That’s hardly a surprise. The network isn’t going to confirm that it’s Hugh Grant until it’s Hugh Grant.
In the meantime, there is plenty of talk about who might take on the role.
There is even some talk that the person who takes on the role will be someone who did it before. That’s because there’s been quite a bit of talk that David Tenant could return to the Tardis.
Some might even say that’s more likely than Hugh Grant.
Determining the credibility of this rumor is difficult. Grant, who starred in Love, Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral, has a far higher profile than the BBC previously selected for its new Doctors.
With a higher profile comes a higher expected pay. That adds a degree of difficulty. The BBC’s licensing fee currently being frozen amidst soaring inflation.
Next Season Will Be A Big Deal
On the other hand, the coming season is going to be quite special.
It’s the 60th anniversary of the BBC Series. Russel T. Davies, who brought the series back to television in 2005, is returning as showrunner.
There’s also the fact that Bad Wolf is coming aboard as the production company behind Doctor Who. The production company is reportedly assuming creative control from the BBC. That’s big news because Sony Pictures recently acquired a majority stake in Bad Wolf.
All of this means that it’s possible the studio is willing to pump Hugh Grant-sized money into the upcoming season to impress fans.
The rumor still seems to be a bit more than a little far fetched. However, the show would have a hard time making a bigger splash than hiring Hugh Grant as the 14th Doctor on Doctor Who.
