‘Ellen DeGeneres Show’ EP Matthew Wright Dies In ‘Tragedy’

Matthew Wright became known for working on a number of shows with Ellen DeGeneres, including her namesake talk show. Recently, his family has announced that the producer has passed away. In addition, DeGeneres herself has also shared her condolences.

Matthew Wright Worked On Nearly 1,000 Episodes Of The Ellen DeGeneres Show

Wright was known to many through his work as an executive and supervising producer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Having worked on the show from 2006 to 2022, he had around 985 episodes credited to him.

Wright had worked with DeGeneres on a number of her shows. These also include Ellen’s Game of Games and Ellen’s Bigger, Longer & Wider Show. From 2002 to 2006, he was also a producer on SoapTalk.

Tragically, however, Wright’s family has revealed that he passed away on October 30, 2026, while working remotely in Los Angeles. He was 52 years old at the time of his passing.

The family has since launched a GoFundMe campaign asking for help. As they shared, “[Wright’s] husband, father, sister and niece are in New York, desperate to be reunited for a proper goodbye. We’re asking for all of his friends, who Matt loved so fully, to help the family at this time. As many of you know, Matt & Justin were both laid off this summer. And the unexpected costs of getting Matt home, a funeral and a memorial are impossible for the family to bear.”

In A Video On Social Media, Ellen DeGeneres Called Wright An ‘Amazing Guy’

The family emphasized how much Matt’s work has touched the people who watched the shows he worked on. As the statement continued, “If Matt has ever made you laugh, said an encouraging word right when you needed it, or ordered one too many appetizers for the enjoyment of the whole table, now is the time to repay the favor.”

The statement continued, “Please donate what you can and share this with anyone who’s been in the orbit of Matt’s huge heart. And when you’re at dinner and see a sunset, know that Matt is looking down, loving you, but wildly disappointed in what you ordered.”

As the family shared, funds raised will go to New York funeral costs, Los Angeles memorial costs, and returning Matt to his and his husband Justin’s family. In addition, extra funds will go to a trust fund on behalf on his niece.

Since the news has come to light, Ellen herself has shared her condolences. Taking to Instagram, she shared in a video, “He was an amazing guy. He was an amazing guy.” She continued, “He was funny. God, he made me laugh. He would surprise me with things that he did all the time. He was smart. He was kind. He was the part of our show that — I mean, everyone loved him.” She added, “I loved him. And it’s just shocking — it’s shocking.”
