Jaleel White became an overnight sensation at the age of 12. He played Steve Urkel, the Winslow’s annoying neighbor, on Family Matters. The sitcom aired on ABC for nine seasons as part of its TGIF lineup. His sudden rise to fame reportedly caused tension behind-the-scenes after Urkel became the main focus of the show.
But Jaleel White doesn’t regret playing the nerdy character. He opened up on Obsessed: The Podcast about why he didn’t fall prey to abuse like some of his peers. “My mom and dad were always right there. Not to darken the conversation, but I think predators can see when a child has someone that’s looking out for their best interests, and I had a hover mom,” he said.
He shared similar sentiments during an interview with USA Today. “When you talk about protection, I’m only going to mention my parents. That’s the common denominator, to be quite honest, between the success stories and the tragic stories,” the Family Matters star said.
