Full House star Jodie Sweetin revealed how she and John Stamos supported each other on their sobriety journeys long after the ’90s sitcom ended.
On the July 15 episode of the Dory Jackson Interview series, Sweetin, 44 — who played the middle sister, Stephanie Tanner, on Full House — got real about overcoming addiction. Jackson asked if Sweetin, Stamos, and Dave Coulier were particularly close, considering they are all sober.
“John and I really, really connected in a lot of ways over that,” Sweetin confirmed.
She added, “We have been there to celebrate each other’s big successes and milestones. I am so glad that I got to be an example of attraction rather than promotion, which is a big principle in recovery.” Sweetin elaborated on the principle, explaining, “Don’t beat people over the head. Just be the result of all of your work, and chances are, people that are looking will find you.”
Stamos stopped drinking in 2015, while Sweetin has been sober since 2011.
“It’s been such a journey,” Sweetin acknowledged. “The work I did in 12-step programs, the work I did in outside programs and therapy, and also just kind of growing up and perspective. You know, all of those things.”
She explained, “You get the opportunity to become a different person, and once you start actually liking that person, it becomes really hard to go back and continue destructive behavior. You kind of go like, ‘Oh, wait, hold on. I want to take care of this little person inside here and see what they’re capable of.’ And I’ve been really fortunate to be able to do that.”
Additionally, Sweetin admitted, “For so long, I think people like me use drugs and alcohol to not at all be attached to who they are. And so to be like, ‘No, no, no, I like me, I don’t need anything, I’m good,’ is very freeing.”
Full House aired for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995. In addition to Sweetin, Stamos, and Coulier, the sitcom starred Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen as Michelle Tanner, Candace Cameron Bure as DJ Tanner, Bob Saget as Danny Tanner, Lori Loughlin as Aunt Becky, and Andrea Barber as Kimmy Gibbler, among others. In 2016, the Netflix spinoff series Fuller House premiered; it aired for five seasons until 2020.
