It’s been less than a month since Hannah Harper was crowned the winner of American Idol Season 24, but she recently joked in a new interview that she’s ready to “quit” music after hitting a major career milestone. Harper made her Grand Ole Opry debut on June 2, ticking a major item off her bucket list.
“It was one of my biggest dreams,” Harper told American Songwriter. “Some people joke and they’re like, ‘What are you going to do when you get to play the Opry?’ I’m like, ‘Quit. What else is there?’”
Harper noted that there’s “no other big moment” to reach for after playing the iconic Nashville venue. “I was honored to have that moment,” she added.
It was made even more special by American Idol judge Carrie Underwood, who was also performing at the Opry on June 2. Underwood even joined Harper onstage for a duet of the mom of three’s original song “String Cheese,” which she first sang during her American Idol audition.
“I never thought that a song that I wrote Carrie Underwood would sing, especially something about cheese. You know what I mean?” Harper joked. “I kind of pinned her down while we were at Idol and asked if she wanted to sing that [with me]. She couldn’t say no on the spot, so she got it out of the way and she did an amazing job.”
Harper noted that she was “honored” to share her Opry debut with Underwood.
All jokes aside, the Opry performance was just the beginning. Harper is now hitting the road for her String Cheese tour, and she said the Opry “gave me the next oomph” to move forward.
“The biggest thing that I’m looking forward to is getting to connect one-on-one with the people who voted for me the entire Idol journey,” she gushed. “I didn’t win with my own ability. It was the people, and the fans, and the friends and family … I don’t want to call them fans, those are my people … who made it happen each week and made me feel loved supported.”
