Joanna and Chip Gaines have worked together for decades. Fans have seen them work on a number of projects together, starting with HGTV’s Fixer Upper. During a recent conversation, Joanna opened up about taking a break.
Joanna Gaines Recently Appeared On Hoda Kotb’s Joy 101 Podcast
Viewers became introduced to Joanna and Chip Gaines through Fixer Upper, which made its debut on HGTV back in 2013. Over the years, fans have also seen a 2017 spin-off, Fixer Upper: Behind the Design, and a 2020 revival.
The two are also known through the media brand Magnolia. This has also brought about the Magnolia Network, which now airs their series.
Recently, Joanna appeared on Hoda Kotb’s Joy 101 podcast, Joanna opened up about taking a break from their work a few years back. As she explained, “Chip and I, you know we’ve been doing this business for almost 25 years. So, [Fixer Upper] was the show we had stopped temporarily, and that was good, but it was also just a lot as we were building our company.”
Joanna continued, “As far as Magnolia, we’ve been doing this for almost 25 years and we’ve never really stopped. And about three years ago, we stopped seeing vision. We stopped remembering like, ‘Why are we doing this?’” She expressed, “I remember I was like, ‘Okay, we’re going to take the summer off,’ which meant disappointing our team, disappointing a lot of things, to just up and leave.”
The HGTV Alum Shared That The Three-Month Break Helped Her & Chip To Refocus
This break lasted around three months. While admitting that this came with losing some work, Joanna felt that doing so was ultimately worth it.
The Fixer Upper star shared, “So it cost us something. But that three months was time for us to go, ‘We need a break. We need clarity. Why are we building this? What are we doing this for?’ And so that was three years ago.”
Joanna felt that this break also helped her and Chip refocus and reevaluate things. She mused, “I think once you start realizing those moments of maybe burnout, you never really want to experience that again. So now the discipline is, the daily discipline of ‘I feel it creeping up.’”
As fans know, Joanna and Chip have a long history together, both personally as well as professionally, with them meeting when he worked at her father’s tire shop. The two married in 2003 and share five children together.
