Hulu’s upcoming serial killer thriller Furious is a tense psychological thriller centered on Alice Black (Emmy Rossum), a former police officer turned FBI agent who is determined to track down a mysterious female serial killer named Catherine (Lola Petticrew).
As the investigation deepens, the lines between hunter and hunted, hero and villain, begin to blur. Alice’s life becomes increasingly intertwined with the elusive suspect, leading both women down a dangerous path.
From executive producer Liz Meriwether, Furious also stars Scoot McNairy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, and Jake Lacy in the heart-pounding drama. With its grounded characters, tense cat-and-mouse story, and psychologically complex killer at its center, the series feels unsettlingly real. But is Furious actually based on a true story or characters, or is the story entirely fictional?
Is Furious based on a true story?
No. Furious is not based on a true story. While the series explores realistic themes and psychological cat-and-mouse games, the characters and central storyline were created specifically for the show and are not inspired by a single real-life case.
What is Furious based on?
The series was loosely inspired by the 1987 neo-noir thriller Black Widow. The film starred Debra Winger as Alexandra Barnes, a U.S. Justice Department analyst who uncovers a suspicious pattern involving a string of wealthy men who died shortly after marrying the same young woman. As Alexandra digs deeper, she realizes the mysterious widow has repeatedly married and seemingly murdered each of the millionaires. Determined to stop her, Alexandra launches her own investigation, placing herself directly in the killer’s path.
There are vast differences between the characters, the story, and the setting, but the two properties share similar themes.
Meriwether told Entertainment Weekly that she became fascinated by “the possibility of exploring the psychology of a female serial killer” after watching Black Widow. “What would lead a woman to become a serial killer?” the writer and executive producer explained. “What would have had to have happened in her life? And then, similarly, who is the woman chasing her? What’s going on in her head?”
