Jamie Lee Curtis is explaining why her time on New Girl wasn’t exactly her “favorite experience.”
In an Instagram post, Curtis clarified a recent comment she made while promoting her new NBC multicamera sitcom, Newlyweds, which she cocreated with Gail Lerner. Curtis, who played Jess’ (Zooey Deschanel) mother, Joan Day, on New Girl, said she preferred performing comedy in front of a live studio audience.
“As if we don’t have bigger issues facing Americans and the world at large, and natural disasters and unnatural behaviors of despots, than to be concerned about a flip comment picked up at a press moment promoting NEWLYWEDS @NBC. I was there gushing about a multi-camera sitcom that I cocreated along with Gail Lerner about a late-in-life love and people finding each other and marrying on a whim,” wrote the Oscar winner.
“It stars Tea Leoni and Tim Daly as the couple, and we are having so much fun, and the audiences are loving it,” wrote Curtis. “I was comparing how much I liked doing the show live in front of a studio audience, which is almost like doing a play where you get immediate feedback, to the experience of doing a single-camera comedy like NEW GIRL where there’s absolutely no feedback, as you’re trying to do comedy in a vacuum.”
Still, Curtis made it clear that her issue wasn’t with New Girl itself, calling the show “fantastic,” praising its creative team, describing Deschanel as “an absolute gem,” and fondly recalling the opportunity to act opposite her friend, Rob Reiner.
“I said it wasn’t my favorite experience although the show itself is fantastic and the team that made it are talented and that Zooey Deschanel is an absolute gem of a human and said I got to play with my friend, Rob Reiner, as exes and that was sweet and lovely and so please, let’s not waste clicks and comments and just move on to WAY more important things,” posted Curtis. “That will be all.”
Curtis appeared on New Girl six times between 2012 and 2018, with Reiner playing Jess’ father, Bob Day. The former on-screen couple even reunited for the show’s final season, when Joan revealed that she and Bob had gotten back together.
