What To Know

  • Nick Reiner has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder for the stabbing deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner.
  • The grand jury indictment includes new special circumstances allegations.
  • Reiner has pleaded not guilty.

Nick Reiner has been indicted on murder charges for the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. New special circumstance allegations have been added to the charges, including “lying in wait.”

The 32-year-old was arrested for the murders of his parents in December 2025 after their bodies were discovered in their home in Brentwood, California, after a stabbing attack. He’s been held without bail since then. Prosecutors are aiming to expedite the trial process.

Reiner was brought to the Criminal Courts Building in downtown Los Angeles on August 12 to hear new charges. He was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder, and now there are additional special circumstances allegations of lying in wait and use of a deadly weapon. The new charges were listed in a grand jury indictment released on July 20 and unsealed on Wednesday, August 12. Reiner pleaded not guilty to the revised charges.

The special circumstances allegations means that there’s a possibility of increased penalties in a potential sentencing process. Additionally, the indictment bypasses the need for a preliminary trial. It will instead go straight to a jury trial. The case is now potentially eligible for the death penalty or life without parole. A trial date has not been set, but Reiner will appear at a pretrial hearing on September 15.

Reiner is represented by a public defender, Los Angeles deputy public defender Kimberly Greene, and has pleaded not guilty. He was previously represented by private attorney Alan Jackson, who stepped away from the case in January 2026.

In June 2026, Reiner sought the release of his trust funds to pay for his legal defense. The petition stated that he is the sole beneficiary of more than $1.5 million in assets, per Variety.

“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement, per Variety. “We hope that by having a grand jury return an indictment in this case, it will bring us one step closer to a trial and achieving justice.”

The When Harry Met Sally and Princess Bride director and his wife were parents to two sons, Nick, 32, and Jake Reiner, 35, and daughter Romy Reiner, 28. Rob also adopted Tracy Reiner, his stepdaughter from his previous marriage with Penny Marshall.

Jake opened up about his parents’ deaths in a Substack article in April detailing how he learned the news from his sister while he was at a celebration of life event.

“The 45-minute Lyft ride from downtown to the west side was unendurable,” Jake said. “My world, as I knew it, had collapsed.”

“They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them,” Jake added. “They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all, they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”
