Fans might be kicking their TVs when they turn on their station for Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, and instead see the FIFA World Cup playing.
Both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are syndicated game shows, meaning they air on different networks at different times throughout the country. The only station this schedule change will impact is Fox. Other stations, such as ABC, will still air the game shows as planned.
The World Cup takes place from June 11 to July 15 with all matches being shown on Fox. Wheel of Fortune fans don’t have to worry too much, as Season 43 ended on June 5, but it will mean fans in some areas miss out on seeing reruns. However, it will significantly impact Jeopardy!, which runs new episodes until July 24.
A Jeopardy! fan who usually makes schedule changes shared a spreadsheet on Reddit about when the soccer tournament will preempt the game show. Not every day and city will be affected. For example, June 11, 15, 17, and 18 will only impact Kansas City, Missouri, and a few other cities if the games go over.
In cities such as Denver, Colorado, and Syracuse, New York, Jeopardy! will be moved to a different station during the days impacted. Many cities will have earlier or later showings, while a few, like Nashville, Tennessee, and New Orleans, Louisiana, will not air at all. A few other cities have preemptions on only one day.
As the weeks roll on, the schedule will be updated, so if you live in any of the cities listed on the sheet, be sure to check back to see if/when you can watch Jeopardy!. Other viewing areas impacted include Baltimore, Maryland, Cincinnati, Ohio, Mobile-Pensacola, Florida, Green Bay/Appleton, Wisconsin, Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas, Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Marquette, Michigan.
The creator of the sheet shared that there will be at least 12 preemptions. More might be added if the soccer games go overtime. The most preemptions will come the week of June 22.
The World Cup is being hosted in North America in 16 cities between the US, Mexico, and Canada. The 23rd edition of the tournament will feature 48 teams. It is the first to have three host countries.
However, not all hope is lost because both game shows are streaming on Hulu and Peacock and are available to watch the next day. So, try to avoid spoilers for Jeopardy! if you can, and sign up (or borrow someone else’s) for the streamers. Only the last seven games, as well as host Ken Jennings‘ 74-game run, are available on the platforms.
During that time, though, fans can watch 10 new episodes of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, which will air exclusively on Disney+ on June 12. Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White will host 30 new celebrities who are all trying to win money for charity.
