Lord of the Rings stars Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd recently reunited for a rare photo 23 years after they last played hobbits in the film trilogy.
On Saturday, August 8, Astin took to Instagram with a snapshot of himself sitting around a table with his former costars at a restaurant.
“The band’s all here,” the Stranger Things star captioned his update.
Wood, 45, played Frodo Baggins, while Astin, 55, played Samwise Gamgee, Monaghan, 49, played Merry Brandybuck, and Boyd, 57, played Pippin Took in 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. They went on to appear in 2002’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
In the comments, LOTR fans rejoiced over the unexpected hobbit reunion, which happened 23 years after they last starred in a film together. One Instagram user exclaimed, “The fact that you 4 still hang out is so goddamn endearing. Now that’s a Fellowship!”
Someone else shared, “Every time one of you posts a pic of the four of you together it makes me so happy!!”
Another joked, “‘And one plate of onion rings to bring them all.’”

In addition to the trilogy, Wood made a brief cameo in the 2012 film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. He will return as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is currently in production and scheduled to release in theaters on December 17, 2027. Ian McKellen will also return as Gandalf, while Lee Pace will reprise his role as Thranduil.
