Everyone wanted to be Martha Stewart in the 1990s. But her personal life was nowhere near as successful as her career. Her marriage to Andy Stewart ended in 1987. Martha Stewart recently put her ex on blast, calling him a ‘jerk’ after their painful split.
The media mogul recently recreated a cover shoot from 1995 for PEOPLE magazine. She was asked if she’d heard from him about her Netflix documentary a few years ago. “Only legally, to remind me of divorce settlement statements,” Martha Stewart said. “Which I had never read. I mean, who cared after two years of arguing about a settlement? I still haven’t read it. He’s a jerk.”
She Claims He Treated Her Like A ‘Castaway’
Martha Stewart turned 85 on August 3, 2026. She told PEOPLE magazine that she has no desire to date or get married again. Her first marriage ended badly. She married Andy Stewart in 1961 and welcomed their only child, Alexis, in 1965. Martha Stewart spent the early years of their marriage as a homemaker before launching a career of her own.
She addressed the shocking end to her marriage in her 2024 Netflix documentary. “He’s the one who wanted the divorce, not I. He was throwing me away. I was 40 years old. I was gorgeous. I was a desirous woman, but he was treating me like a castaway,” she said.
She claimed they were both unfaithful during their marriage. However, she said her ex wanted to “run off” with other women. Martha Stewart, on the other hand, likened herself to a monogamous swan. “I always said I was a swan and like all swans, they are monogamous. And I thought monogamy was admirable. I did. I thought it was admirable. But it turned out that it didn’t save a marriage,” she said about stepping out on her then-husband.
Andy Stewart did have something to say about the documentary. He released a statement at the time saying that he’s “moved on” with his life. He married his third wife, Shyla Nelson Stewart, in 2016.
