What To Know

  • Alex James Barnett, wanted for the murder of Tucson Police Cadet Carlos Ramirez, was arrested after a three-hour SWAT standoff.
  • Social media users speculated that Barnett resembled the ‘Porch Guy’ seen on Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera.
  • Barnett has a criminal history including domestic violence, burglary, theft, and child abuse.

An Arizona murder suspect has been arrested by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department just days after speculation spread online that the man could be the infamous ‘Porch Guy’ seen on Nancy Guthrie‘s doorbell camera.

As previously reported, the PCSD issued an arrest warrant on Friday (August 21) for Alex James Barnett, a 33-year-old man wanted in connection with the murder of Tucson Police Cadet Carlos Ramirez. After police shared a public assistance notice, including a photo of Barnett, social media users compared the suspect to the Porch Guy.

Barnett has now been taken into custody after a three-hour standoff at an apartment complex on the east side of Tucson. According to the Arizona Daily Star, Barnett peacefully surrendered after the Pima Regional SWAT team surrounded the building on Monday (August 24) evening.

Ramirez, a former Pima County corrections officer, was shot and killed in the early hours of August 19 in an apparent home invasion. Another man, Santiago Jorge Rogers, was arrested on Saturday morning (August 22) in connection with the killing, while a third man suspected to be involved was located but not placed under arrest.

The PCSD hasn’t announced any connection between the suspects and the Nancy Guthrie investigation, but that hasn’t stopped speculation. Several social media users continued to compare physical similarities between Barnett and the Porch Guy.

Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today’Savannah Guthrie, went missing on February 1, when police believe she was abducted from her Tucson home. Investigators later released doorbell camera footage of a masked suspect seen approaching Nancy’s home and tampering with the security camera. The FBI described the man as 5’9” to 5’10” tall, with an average build.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, Barnett has a court record that includes domestic violence, burglary, theft, and child abuse.
