- The search for missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has shifted to Mexico after a volunteer group received an anonymous tip.
- The Pima County Sheriff’s Department acknowledges the reports but states they have not been contacted by Mexican authorities.
An anonymous tip has led the search for Nancy Guthrie to Mexico as the focus of the investigation shifts more than 70 miles south of her home in Tucson, Arizona.
According to local publication El Imparcial, Buscando Corazones Nogales, a volunteer group in Mexico that searches for missing people, says it received a tip that the 84-year-old mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie is in an unmarked grave near the border city of Nogales.
The leader of the collective, Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, stated that the group received an anonymous call informing them that Guthrie had been buried in the Mariposa area. The position is located west of Nogales and near the border strip with Arizona.
“We received an anonymous call stating that the woman’s remains were in the Mariposa area, in a grave near a stream; we have come now to search this stream, which we hadn’t been able to explore during the initial operation,” Ayala Ortiz told authorities.
The group’s leader said volunteers previously searched the area, including nearby streams, based on the anonymous tip, but had not found any sign of Nancy Guthrie.
According to the publication, between April and May, searchers in the same area uncovered more than 25 concealed graves and recovered the remains of at least 32 people.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement on Thursday, June 11: “Statement regarding information circulating online related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation: We are aware of the reports regarding an anonymous tip related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation that was provided to a group in Mexico. At this time, we have not been contacted by the Mexican authorities.”
The statement went on to read: “The investigation remains active and ongoing, and we will continue to follow up on any credible information.”

Guthrie has been missing since February 1, when police believe she was abducted from her home in Tucson. Investigators have released doorbell camera footage of a masked suspect and sent DNA for testing at the FBI lab in Quantico, but no suspects have been named.
