Sofia Vergara has joked that she had been robbed of latest Emmy win over her role in the series Griselda at the 2024 Emmy Awards. The actress had been nominated four times before for her work on Modern Family. Vergara also previously shared what it was like getting into the role of the famous drug lord.
This Was Vergara’s Fifth Emmy Nomination
Griselda stars Vergara as Griselda Blanco, with the series based around the real-life Columbian drug lord, who was assassinated in 2012. In essence, the series serves as a cautionary tale over the dangers of power. Vergara’s performance had especially been hailed by critics, which naturally gave way to the actress’ latest Emmy nomination.
Vergara made history as the first Latina actress to be nominated for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for the role. However, the award ended up going to Jodie Foster for True Detective: Night Country.
The actress took to social media to make light of the situation. As noted by People, the video was recorded by a friend of the actress who was at the awards show. In Spanish, the actress said that, “They robbed me of the Emmy for the fifth time.”
Beforehand, Vergara had been nominated four times for her work on the sitcom Modern Family, where she played Gloria Delgado-Pritchett. Each time, she was nominated for “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.”
Vergara Has Talked About What It Was Like Getting Into The Role
Griselda premiered on January 25, 2024, on Netflix, where the series was comprised of six hour-long episodes.
When the actress first learned of her nomination, People noted she released the following statement, noting it was for her first dramatic acting role:
“Wow. Griselda was my first dramatic role ever, and it took us 15 years to bring her to life. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who was a part of this series. I could have never done this without my director Andres Baiz, my costar Alberto Guerra, Eric Newman and the full creative team, my partner and producer Luis Balaguer, Ted Sarandos, Bela Bajaria, and their team at Netflix, and all the amazing cast and crew.”
Before she was cast in the role, Vergara worried the popularity of Modern Family would make it hard for her to break out of comedic roles. As she noted, “I never dreamed that after Modern Family I would be able to work on something as special as Griselda.”
The actress noted the role was a bit of a challenge for her. As she explained, “I had to really investigate what it meant to be a woman in that era. A mother, a Colombian woman…that turned into this monster. So, it was a really difficult task for me to understand it.”
However, she admitted there were some similarities that helped her connect to the part. “We are both Colombian, we are both immigrants, we are both mothers, we are both women. So I did relate to her a lot,” she added.
