With Law & Order: SVU so close to its 30th season — its 28th premieres this fall on NBC — it feels like it has to reach that number, right? Well, series star Kelli Giddish, who made her debut as Amanda Rollins 15 years ago, seems confident it will happen.
“Absolutely. It’s a huge milestone, and Dick Wolf wants it and I think Mariska [Hargitay] wants it, and when those two people want something, it gets done,” Giddish told TV Insider while in our ATX TV Festival suite at the end of May.
Hargitay is the sole original cast member left on the series. We first met her Olivia Benson, who’s now a captain, as a detective in 1999. She’s also an executive producer. Ice-T joined the series in Season 2. Of the current cast, Giddish was the next one to join in Season 13. She exited as a series regular in Season 24, then guest starred in Season 25, recurred in Season 26, and rejoined as a full-time cast member in Season 27.
SVU has been on for so long that it has a wide range of fans, as Giddish noted at ATX.
“You know what’s really cool is when the assistant coach of the Knicks comes up to you and says, ‘I love your show. I’ve been watching it since the very start.’ I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is so cool,’” she said. “I’m so happy, but it’s crazy the gamut of people that watch the show and what I love most of all is that it’s a generational thing. So many times, it’s like, ‘I watched that with my grandmama,’ ‘I watched that with my mom,’ ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe I’m seeing you in the subway. My mom’s going to freak out.’ I get that so many times. Or, ‘My sister or my daughter’s going to freak out.’ It’s a family thing.”
