‘Talent’ Callbacks, Training Camp in Seattle, WWII Intrigue in ‘Das Boot,’ ‘Wizards’ Finale

America’s Got Talent

The judging continues, but in a different format, as the summer’s top-rated talent show introduces two weeks of Callbacks for acts that haven’t quite convinced the panel they’re worthy of moving on to the live rounds. Last week, 28 acts were given the go-ahead, including the 10 lucky Golden Buzzer recipients. With only 16 spots left, they now reassess 23 remaining acts, each judge joined by celebrity guests: Mel B with fellow Spice Girls member Emma Bunton, Howie Mandel with comedian Nikki Glaser, Sofia Vergara with Latin Grammy winner Sebastián Yatra and YouTuber Lele Pons, and Simon Cowell with pop star Normani and Grammy-winning songwriter-producer Poo Bear. The Callbacks take place in more intimate settings, with each judge viewing their specially picked acts: Cowell in his Malibu home, Vergara in Beverly Hills, Mel B across the pond in her Leeds hometown, and Mandel in his podcast studio and the Laugh Factory. Whoever makes it through will appear in the live shows, beginning August 18.

Hard Knocks

For the first time since its inaugural season in 2001 with the Baltimore Ravens, Hard Knocks embeds with the championship team that will be defending its Super Bowl title this season. The five-episode series from NFL Films, narrated by Ray Donovan‘s Liev Schreiber, will follow head coach Mike Macdonald and his team, including quarterback Sam Darnold and 2025’s AP Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba, as they prepare for the upcoming season at the Seahawks’ training camp in Renton, Washington.

Das Boot

Not to be confused with the gripping 1981 film set aboard a German U-boat in World War II, this acclaimed German series ventures far beyond the sea and war fronts to depict military and political intrigues within the Nazi regime, the resistance movement, and abroad. Action in Season 2, released in 2020 but only now being shown in the U.S., includes subplots in America, where former U-boat captain Klaus Hoffmann (Rick Okon) finds himself in an underworld of war profiteers and Nazi sympathizers — and Harlem jazz. The season launches with two episodes, with the third and fourth seasons expected to follow in the months to come.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place

The search for Alex (Only Murders in the Building‘s Selena Gomez) occupies the magical Russo family in the four-part series finale of the fantasy sequel to Wizards of Waverly Place. (All four episodes will be available for streaming on Disney+ on Wednesday.) Gomez makes her directorial debut in the opening episode, with young wizard Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) still reeling from the news that she’s Alex’s daughter. Billie’s next move: reunite with her long-lost father in hopes of finding Alex and, once and for all, vanquishing the forces of evil.

Once Upon A Time in Space

The docuseries finale depicts a space program in transition, with the Space Shuttle operation being discontinued after another tragedy while the International Space Station nears completion. Cooperation with Russia, on whose rockets NASA initially arranges transport for American astronauts, becomes strained after the annexation of Crimea, making the arrival of SpaceX and its American-based rockets a welcome development.

• Betrayal: Dirty Secrets (streaming on Hulu): A three-part installment of the love-gone-wrong docuseries reveals how Karoline Borega learned that her husband, a Colorado Springs Police officer, was using his position of authority to conduct a secret sex life.
• Best Medicine (streaming on Netflix): Before the charming Americanized version of Doc Martin, starring Josh Charles, returns for a second season on Fox on September 22, the entire first season has been licensed to Netflix for those seeking a pleasant escape.
