Ex-spouses Paula (Tatiana Maslany) and Karl (Jake Johnson) have struggled to understand each other since back when they were still married in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed. But when Paula gets wrapped up in a murder investigation, the chasm between them only grows, complicating their custody battle over their daughter, Hazel (Nola Wallace).
In the next episode of the Apple TV drama, coming out June 17, Karl accuses Paula of getting Hazel mixed into her legal mess. Maslany and Johnson face off in the TV Insider exclusive clip from the tense scene from Episode 6, above. Warning: Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed spoilers ahead!
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed follows newly divorced mom Paula as she falls down a dangerous rabbit hole of blackmail, murder, and youth soccer. Convinced she witnessed a crime — while simultaneously struggling through a custody battle and an identity crisis — Paula begins her own investigation, one that could unravel a greater conspiracy while also holding the keys to rebuilding her family and sense of self.
Paula scheduled some intimacy into her busy life as a struggling single mom by hiring camboy Trevor (Brandon Flynn) for virtual sessions over the course of a few months. In Episode 1, Trevor was attacked in his home during one of their calls. The attack was a scam to steal money from Paula, but then Trevor really was murdered — by his own boyfriend, Dennis, played by Murray Bartlett. Paula found the body, and her life as been a mess ever since.
The professional fact-checker is determined to find the truth and absolve herself, but the accident in Portland revealed in Episode 3 makes Karl extremely suspicious of his ex.
In flashbacks to Portland, viewers learned that Paula was involved in an accident that killed their next-door neighbor back when she was still married to Karl. Mallory (Jesse Hodges) was working with Karl at the time, and Karl eventually left Paula for Mallory. That night in Portland was the beginning of the end of their marriage. (The cast breaks down the episode here.)
Karl reveals in the clip that he was questioned by police because of Paula’s investigation, and Portland came up during the questioning. Now, there’s no convincing Karl that Paula is being honest about the investigation. Paula insists that it’s all a big misunderstanding, but Karl thinks she’s lying. He believes that Paula gave her new boyfriend the keys to her apartment, in which Hazel frequently stays, without telling Karl about it. But Paula doesn’t have a new boyfriend…
