Filming of The Gilded Age Season 4 is currently underway, and photos from the New York City set reveal a big parade to come in the new season of the glitzy HBO period drama, set to premiere later this year. Could it be the arrival of the Statue of Liberty?
Here’s the official logline for The Gilded Age Season 4: “Bertha Russell [Carrie Coon] changed Society at a cost. Now, her family must reckon with the consequences as Agnes van Rhijn [Christine Baranski] seizes an opportunity to regain her position. Meanwhile, Marian [Louisa Jacobson] forges a new path for herself, and Peggy [Denée Benton] works to be accepted by her future in-laws. In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.”
The last time we saw Peggy, she was getting proposed to by William (Jordan Donica). The Season 4 description confirms she says yes. Marian and Larry (Harry Richardson), meanwhile, were just starting to reconcile their romantic relationship as Season 3 ended. Richardson is the only main cast member featured in the parade gallery below. He was seen running through the parade set on May 16.
The parade was set up in New York City’s financial district. Hundreds of extras in period-accurate costumes flooded the streets of Wall Street to bring the scene to life.
Based on the fliers around the set and the red, white, and blue flags everywhere, it seems the parade was to celebrate the arrival of the Statue of Liberty from France. The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York on June 17, 1885. Donna Murphy, who plays Mrs. Astor, previously said on Instagram that Season 4 is set in 1886, but HBO has not confirmed exactly when the season takes place.
Bystanders posted videos of the production on social media in May. One Instagram user (MickMickNYC) said, “Stepping directly onto the set of HBO’s The Gilded Age in Manhattan today, and the production scale is absolutely mind-blowing.”
“To completely transform modern New York City back to the 1880s, the crew laid down massive textured carpets over the asphalt to perfectly mimic historic stone streets,” they continued. “There are over 350 background actors fully dressed in period-accurate costumes, alongside dozens of real horse-drawn carriages filling the block. It is incredible to see how much physical craftsmanship goes into creating just a few moments of television magic.”
More videos from other bystanders show extras waiting for a take to begin on set. Another video shows Richardson running through the crowd, with audible direction signaling the beats of the scene.
Production was given some great sunny weather for the occasion.
