Netflix’s next true crime docuseries examines the shocking mass murder case that terrified the nation in 2022. The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare will delve into the murders of four college students — Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle — who were killed in their University of Idaho off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022.
The streamer has now revealed details about what to expect from the series, so here’s a look at everything there is to know about The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare so far.
When will The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare premiere?
Netflix will release the three-part docuseries on Wednesday, July 29.
What is The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare about?
The series details the chilling death of four college students, the mystery that followed the murders, and the aftermath after their killer was finally brought to justice.
The series promises “unprecedented access to the victims’ families and police footage” while also balancing the job of “honoring four young lives while tracing every step from that night to the arrest that followed.” The series’ ultimate question, the description says, is “How do you make sense of something so senseless?”
The series is directed by Skye Borgman, who said in a statement, “When I first came to this story, I kept coming back to one simple thought: four young people lost their lives, and they deserved to be remembered for far more than the tragedy that took them. Making this series became deeply personal to me because I felt a responsibility to keep Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin at the center of every decision we made. At a time when so much attention has been focused on the case itself, I felt it was important to create something that brings the focus back to who they were, the lives they lived, and the love that still surrounds them.”

What else is there to know about The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare?
The full description for the series reads: “On November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students — Madison, Kaylee, Ethan, and Xana — had their futures stolen from them. Their bodies were found in an off-campus home, leaving a tight-knit college town shattered and a nation gripped by grief. For weeks, a killer walked free. From director Skye Borgman (Unknown Number: The High School Catfish) and Academy-Award nominated executive producer Joe Berlinger (Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey), this three-part documentary series is the definitive chronicle of one of the most chilling murder cases in recent memory — honoring four young lives while tracing every step from that devastating night to the arrest that followed. With unprecedented access to the victims’ families and police footage, the series peels back the layers of a case that forever changed Moscow, Idaho, and asks the question that haunts everyone left behind: How do you make sense of something so senseless?”
In a statement, EP Joe Berlinger said of the story, “As a father of two daughters who had great college experiences, this case struck a nerve with me unlike many stories I’ve covered. Though we were among the first documentarians on the scene, it was important to us to tell the complete story. This documentary is the definitive account: unprecedented access to key family members, never-before-seen bodycam footage, police interviews revealing case details for the first time, and access to forensic evidence. We felt the best way to honor the victims was to tell the full, accurate story of everything that happened that horrible night in Idaho.”
