Fans of The Rookie have seen Lucy and Tim through a “will they or won’t they” love story. Recently, Lucy’s actress Melissa O’Neil discussed the relationship, teasing what their future could be. Notably, this comes out as Valentine’s Day could prove to be a pivotal moment for the couple.
Melissa O’Neil Has Been Part Of The Rookie From The Start
O’Neil first came to prominence after winning the third season of Canadian Idol. As an actress, one of her breakout roles was the starring role of Two/Rebecca/Portia Lin on the space opera Dark Matter, appearing on the show for three seasons.
In 2018. O’Neil took on the role of LAPD Officer Lucy Chen and Sava Wu on The Rookie. On the series, Lucy has had an interesting relationship with Tim Bradford, who starts out as her training officer.
The two have occasionally arranged dates for each other. Lucy once set up Tim with her friend Rachel. Tim once set her up with Chris Sanford on a double date. However, as the series went on, Lucy and Tim eventually confessed they had feelings for each other, but that wasn’t the end of the story.
Valentine’s Day Could Prove To Be A Turning Point For The Couple
The sixth season ended with Tim breaking things off with Lucy as his military past comes to light. However, the seventh season has brought them back into a “will they or won’t they” romance.
Most recently, on the February 11th episode, Lucy and Tim found themselves together after the LAPD Valentine’s Day party. Tim received a cut on the back of his neck, with Lucy tending to the wound. After some hesitation, the two ended up hooking up.
Recently, O’Neil herself talked about the scene in a conversation with Us Weekly. As she commented, “I think that’s how strong their connection is.”
“I’m sure it’s in the very, very, very far back of their mind [to hook up], but also the adrenaline of Tim getting into a fight, and then he’s got, like, a cut. Is there glass in there? Like, what’s going on? It’s on the back of your neck. How are you exactly gonna clean that up?”
On some level, O’Neil felt this was a natural reaction to the moment. As she explained, “It’s almost like all bets are off. We’re not in any realm that’s familiar. You’ve never seen me in this dress. We’ve never been in this hotel room. It’s almost like they are just somewhere else entirely.”
However, once things come to an end, there is the question of what happens next. Lucy says this can’t happen again and Tim appears to agree.
However, O’Neil herself believes Lucy isn’t so sure she believes that herself. As she explained, “Now that this kind of line has been crossed, I firmly believe that verbally and mentally she absolutely means what she says. But I don’t even think she buys it,”
The Actress Noted Two Possible Futures For Tim & Lucy
O’Neil also teased on what this could mean for Tim and Lucy’s future. As she noted, after their Season 6 fallout, Lucy needs more than a physical connection to patch things up.
The actress noted, “For Lucy, it is going [to] require a very real conversation and accountability. She’s not just gonna slide into something if nothing has changed, especially because he’s the one that said that he can’t do this.”
“She’d need a real sincere conversation and accountability because he kind of hung her out to dry. It’s like classic avoidant attachment.”
O’Neil noted that, if Tim can’t grant her this, they would likely still have a good working relationship. As she explained, “She leans on him in that way for his thoughts in the professional environment. She wants his advice, and that intimacy exists for them as well.”
The actress concluded things with one last tease. As she shared, “But as far as the romantic thing, I think it would be important for her to have that [conversation] before they could really dive back in seriously in a relationship kind of a way.”
