Dan Greaney, the longtime Simpsons writer who prophesied Donald Trump‘s presidency in a 2000 episode of the hit animated series, has announced his own bid for the 2028 presidential election.
In a video shared on his official Instagram page on Tuesday (May 26), Greaney appeared in character as “The Prophet,” dressed in a robe, wig, and wizardly beard. “Trump, Vance, the billionaires, careerists, and cowards in both parties have turned their backs on [the United States],” he said. “It’s money, power, and security for them, but not for you.”
“In America, the government is supposed to work for everyone. Democracy for all, accountability for all, prosperity for all. We must restore this,” Greaney continued. “I’d love to help, but I’m not a lawyer. I’m just a self-proclaimed prophet… who went to law school, graduated, passed the bar… Wait! I am a lawyer!”
Greaney, who also served as a consulting producer on The Office, then transformed into a clean-shaven, suit-wearing politician to officially launch his campaign for the 2028 presidency as a “progressive Republican in the tradition of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.”
“His platform includes restoring democratic norms alongside progressive policies such as universal healthcare and the Green New Deal, unified under the campaign’s central idea of building an America that works for all,” reads a press release from Greaney’s campaign, per People.
Greaney, who notes that he’s occasionally voted Republican, says his candidacy is “an effort to engage Americans across ideological lines, including within the Republican base” and “an attempt to bridge entrenched divisions and to speak to a broader sense of shared national purpose.”
The veteran screenwriter’s famed moment came in the 2000 episode of The Simpsons titled “Bart to the Future.” In the flash-forward episode, Lisa Simpson is depicted as the U.S. president who has been saddled with a “budget crunch” left by her predecessor, “President Trump.”
Greaney made a playful reference to his prediction abilities at the end of his campaign announcement, saying, “As to what happens next… we’ll just have to wait and see. You will, at least. I actually do know how it turns out.”
