Craig Melvin has been part of all sorts of moments on Today. During a recent episode, he teased a correspondent on the air when he appeared to be late for the show. However, Melvin’s colleague was able to explain what happened with a few jokes of their own.
Craig Melvin Had A Few Jokes At The End Of A Today Segment Concerning Labor Day Travel
Melvin is known for his work on Today, becoming a co-anchor for the first and second hours in early 2025. He ultimately joined NBC News in 2011.
Since joining the network, Melvin has been part of a number of NBC programs. Notably, he also appears as a substitute anchor for the NBC Nightly News.
During a recent episode of Today, Melvin was part of a segment discussing travel around Labor Day weekend. At the time, NBC News correspondent Tom Costello reported live from the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Costello had overslept and was late for his appearance on the morning show. Towards the end of the segment, Melvin couldn’t resist teasing the correspondent. As he quipped, “If you had been trying to catch a flight this morning, Tom Costello would have missed it.”
Tom Costello Noted That This Was A First For Him After Over 20 Years With The Morning Show
Costello defended himself, noting that this was a first for him. He shared, “I’ve been doing The Today Show for, it’ll be 23 years in November. I have never overslept until this morning.” He then explained that his producer called him at 6:30 AM local time to alert him that he was running late.
Costello recalled, “He said, ‘Where are you?!’ And I said, ‘I’m in bed, why?’ And he said, ‘It’s 6:30.’ And I said, ‘No, it’s not. It’s 1:30.’ My clock said 1:30.”
Ultimately blaming what happened on his clock, Costello then shared an image of the device, revealing that it indeed read 1:48 AM. He teased, “It’s time to buy a new clock.”
Taking what happened with a sense of humor, he joked, “All of us on The Today Show, we get one of these, right? We get one mistake. I’ve done it. It’s my first one.”
Melvin continued to tease Costello, joking, “1987 called, it wants its Timex back.” Costello didn’t argue this, saying that he would have to give in and use a smartphone as an alarm. He concluded, “I guess I gotta go to my iPhone. I don’t know what else to do. I can’t go with what I have.”
Costello joined NBC News back in 2024. He has worked on a number of programs, including Today and NC Nightly News. He also appeared on MSNBC and CNBC.
