What To Know

  • CBS Evening News with Tony Dokoupil was the only major evening newscast to show week-over-week growth for the week of July 27.
  • ABC World News Tonight with David Muir remained the top-rated evening newscast.
  • NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas ranked second in viewership.

The latest evening news ratings are in, and it’s good news for Tony Dokoupil and CBS Evening News, which was the only newscast to show growth for the second week in a row.

According to AdWeek, citing national live+same-day big data plus program ratings from Nielsen, CBS Evening News averaged 4.127 million total viewers and 570,000 viewers in the coveted 25-54 demographic for the week of July 27. This was up 4% in total viewers and up 10% in the key demo compared to the week prior.

The show was also up compared to the same period in 2025, with an increase of 8% among total viewers and 3% in the demo. It was also the first time since the week of June 22 that the newscast finished above 4 million total viewers.

Despite the growth, CBS Evening News still trailed its competition. ABC World News Tonight with David Muir held the top spot for the week of July 27, averaging 8.168 million total viewers and 1.078 million demo viewers. This was flat in total viewers compared to the week before, but up 3% in the demo.

Compared to last year, World News Tonight was up 10% in total viewers and up 5% in the demo.

NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas claimed the second spot, averaging 6.62 million total viewers and 948,000 demo viewers for the week of July 27. The show was flat in total viewers and down 1% in the demo compared to the previous week.

Year over year, Nightly News was up by 19% in total viewers and up 17% in the key demo.

Dokoupil took over at CBS Evening News at the beginning of 2026 under Bari Weiss’ new leadership. Despite the two-week growth, though, the program is still struggling in overall ratings.
