What To Know

  • TV Insider exclusively debuts the first 5 minutes of Dark Matter Season 2 — and the introduction of Agent Mitchel MacNamara.
  • Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly tease the conflict to come.

When Apple TV’s sci-fi thriller Dark Matter returns for its sophomore season, we’ll finally get the answer to one big question: Can the Dessens get their happy ending?

As Season 1 concluded on Blake Crouch‘s series, physicist Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), his artist wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), and their teenaged son Charlie (Oakes Fegley) stepped out of the Box — the multiverse-hopping invention created by an alternate Jason — and into what might be a utopian world for their fresh start. But fresh starts can be tricky, especially when they’re still, more or less, on the run.

They’ll need to remain a tight-knit family unit to survive. However, “they each see things in each other that they don’t recognize,” Connelly tells TV Insider. “Daniela sees things in herself that she doesn’t recognize. And it’s not just that threats come from within the marriage, because they do, but it’s also that anyone can come through and use the Box for different reasons. Some people come through with good intentions, and some people come through with less admirable intentions.”

“There’s also a sense that they have different opinions, as family members, about what would warrant getting back in the Box to escape the world that they’ve deemed safe or not safe,” adds Edgerton. “They have to move as a unit, but there’s three components to the unit….so that becomes a threat, too, about how they make decisions together.”

Before the show gets to all that, in the season’s first five minutes, which we can exclusively debut above, we’ll go back to the story’s original Chicago, where the bodies of 13 other Jasons have been discovered. “What, is it illegal to look like dead people?” a remaining Jason asks, while being held at a police station.

Enter: Agent Mitchel MacNamara (played by Silicon Valley vet Chris Diamantopoulos). He’s finishing off a donut and taking over the case from the Chicago cops. But, he quickly admits, he isn’t a member of a law enforcement agency. “Black sites, that’s where I normally work,” he tells the nervous Jason. “Man, are they unpleasant, but they are effective.”

Unfortunately, MacNamara hasn’t quite figured out the riddle of why there are so many Jasons, and his line of questioning is taking him down a different conspiracy theory entirely. Still, he’s a danger to this Jason. “I’ve got two other Jasons in custody — first one to prove how useful they can be stays off my autopsy table,” he threatens. “I’ll cut you all open.”

Does he mean it? Will this Jason help him? Check out the first five minutes, and get ready to theorize.
