Patience Season 2 is currently in season on PBS. The crime drama stars Ella Maisy Purvis as a woman with autism whose unique lived experience and skills make her an asset in her work at an English detective precinct. Season 2 kicked off on June 14 on PBS, and it delivered an unexpected twist to Patience: The new detective, Frankie Monroe (Jessica Hynes), doesn’t want her help with cases. Filming is split between York, England, and Antwerp, Belgium. Some York filming locations from Seasons 1 and 2 include Clifford’s Tower, York Castle, the Shambles, the York Minster cathedral, the famous streets of Stonegate and King’s Staith, the City Walls, the Castle Museum, the Grand Hotel, and more.
They filmed in Belgium as a nod to the series that inspired Patience, Astrid et Raphaëlle. The Belgian filming locations were in Antwerp, Bruges, and Brussels.
Creator Matt Baker said that there’s a specific reason why they chose this setting: The town is like a puzzle.
“There’s something about York itself, which is a little bit like a maze; it’s got all these old pathways, snickets, cut-throughs and small passageways,” Baker told The Yorkshire Post. “It has an iconic quality which is probably underrepresented on screen.”
“It was a creative [decision]; the story of Patience revolves a little bit around this idea of puzzles and puzzle solving,” Baker added. “A lot of autistic people have what you call a special interest and Patience’s special interest is puzzles and puzzle solving. This is something she inherited from her father, who was a policeman and who used her interest in criminology detective fiction to bring her out of her shell as a young girl.”
