Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Anna’s Alliance With Max Takes a Dangerous Turn

There’s a thin line between a hero and a villain, and Cape Fear is making me question everyone.

On Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 4, Anna may have made a deal with the devil after having a gun aimed at her, while her husband and children’s storylines went in very different directions.

We might as well start with that Nevaeh bombshell because that legitimately took me by surprise, and it’s sure to be something that pops up as the series progresses.

We don’t know for sure that she’s Max’s daughter, but the show did a fantastic job of making me believe she is.

Why else would Nevaeh want to immerse herself in the lives of the Bowden teenagers?

She’s reckless, reactive, and deeply unsettling to watch. It’s like I don’t know what she’s going to do next, but I know it isn’t going to be something good.

I should have known when Anna threatened to have her tried as an adult on Cape Fear Season 1 Episode 3 that this would come back around.

Anna’s actions alone in that scene would have been enough for Nevaeh to realize that Anna could have played a bigger part in Max going to prison than she’s letting on.

Nevaeh has seemingly been working on Zack for much longer than Max has been out of prison, which leads me to believe this revenge plan has been in the works for a long time.

Cape Fear’s Teenagers Are Causing Problems

What I don’t know is how Zack and Natalie will react when the truth inevitably comes out, because I have a sneaking suspicion they won’t follow anything their parents say ever again.

Natalie heard her mother and father talk about what they did all those years ago, but she doesn’t have any facts to go on.

The teenagers are undoubtedly tired of this disconnect with their parents. Natalie’s outburst about her mother never following through on any plans with her was right on the money.

The better way to handle it would have been in private, but Natalie seems well beyond caring about that now.

Who can blame her? If you think your whole life has been a lie, it’s hard to make sense of anything else.

I hope Natalie pieces together the truth about Nevaeh before too long, because something tells me she has a lot to lose if this wayward teenager keeps pulling her down this ugly path later on Cape Fear Season 1.

As for Zack, he’s a tough nut to crack. It’s evident that he’s been harmed by the past and what happened to Sofia, and he’s become fixated on finding some resolution.

His little plan to run into Sofia at the art show was so stupid because he needed to let her move on. Every time she sees him, it’s a reminder of what he did.

And I don’t think her mother’s reaction was an overreaction, either. What Zack did was an invasion of privacy, and he doesn’t get to decide whether the victim of his actions speaks to him.

He’s obviously struggling to cope, which I can sympathize with, but he needs help that goes far beyond what an average therapist can provide.

I have no idea what part of his body he’ll mutilate now that he’s back in cahoots with Nevaeh, but it’s not going to be good.

After learning more about Tom’s brother’s suicide, it’s obvious he’s been battling these repressed memories for years and lashes out whenever they rise to the surface.

Tom clearly didn’t want to tell Zack the truth about his brother, and I get that. Sometimes it’s easier to tell someone a curated version of events when the reality is too painful to revisit.

There’s also the fact that Zack would have learned about it at a young age. Tom knows his son needs help, but I don’t see Zack getting any better if this family keeps avoiding the hard conversations.

More than anything, it feels like they’re all living under the same roof rather than functioning as a family. Even Tom and Anna don’t feel like they’re on the same page anymore.

Anna gets so consumed by her career that I’m starting to wonder whether she believes that’s necessary because everything else in her life is threatening to fall apart.

Can Anna Bounce Back?

Anna is so matter-of-fact about everything in her professional life, but she struggles at home because of the disconnect between everyone.

I loved how she thought she could get the answers she needed for her case by recording the man in his own home.

Did she really think he wouldn’t be clued in on them being in a one-party state? If he’s had trouble with the law before, he’d have learned all about that.

She definitely didn’t deserve to get a gun pointed at her, but she was luring that man into a false sense of security.

It makes sense that she had to turn to Max because he was the only person who could produce the result she wanted.

The issue, though, is that this crazy lady, played by Juliette Lewis, now believes Anna is one of Max’s conquests.

I honestly think Max knew she was pursuing him and kissed Anna on that bridge so she’d back off and redirect her attention elsewhere.

It’s wild that the woman showed up outside Anna’s house because it highlighted just how dangerous she really is.

Now that she’s armed with the knowledge of the kiss and Anna’s working relationship with Max, she’s going to do everything she can to make Anna’s life miserable.

Anna may think she’s using Max to get what she wants, but every step she takes toward him seems to create a new problem.

If this episode proved anything, it’s that she’s getting pulled deeper into his world, whether she realizes it or not.

What are your thoughts on the past trauma Tom faced? Do you believe that this family can work things out on this Apple TV thriller?

Still here? You’re our kind of people.
