Get to Know Season 28 Houseguest & MMA Fighter Kamu Kirk

When an MMA fighter enters the Big Brother house, he is expected to win a lot of physical competitions. Kamuela “Kamu” Kirk, from Phoenix, Arizona, has only won a few, but made headlines after making anti-drag comments.

Kirk, who found himself in many alliances, won a wrestling-themed Head of Household competition and a ’70s-themed disco Power of Veto competition so far. He is part of the Red Corner and Toolshed alliances. During his HOH, he started a fight with Jason de Puy and called him out in front of everyone. Kamu angered his closest allies in the house — Haley Thogmartin and Chuk Anyanwu— when he didn’t use the veto and take either of them off the block in week five.

His MMA Career

According to the UFC website, Kamu has had five wins by knockout, six wins by submission, and nine first-round finishes. He had his octagon fight in June 2021, but made his MMA debut in 2014. His fighting name is The Jawaiian, which was given to him by his father. “It was a nickname given to me by my father due to my family origin being from Jamaica and Hawaii,” he told UFC.

Kamu is a two-time IBJJF world champion and a black belt in BJJ. When he was four, his dad put him in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Kamu made his amateur debut at 17 and turned pro at 19.

Schooling and Other Jobs

Kamu shared that he switched to online schooling in his sophomore year of high school to focus on MMA. He did not attend college. Although not much is known about Kamu’s jobs before he turned pro, he did tell the UFC that he used to teach fitness classes at a senior resort. His family also owns the gym that he trains and coaches at.

Kamu Takes His Faith Seriously

On his Instagram, Kamu shared that he was baptized as a child by his dad. He began to question his faith as he got older, however. But, as Kamu grew into an adult, he studied the bible and found his faith in Christianity again. “I was blown away by the overwhelming evidence supporting the Bible, Jesus, his death, burial, and resurrection, even from non-Christian sources. I began to understand that being a Christian did not mean you needed to have blind faith,” Kamu wrote.

“Once I believed the Bible was true, I was convicted that eternity, heaven and hell were also. We’re all going to die, and there’s nothing else in the world that matters more than making sure we end up in the right place once we pass from this side of eternity to the next. Forever is a very long time,” he went on.

What His Tattoo Means

On Big Brother, Kamu has shown off his tattoos many times. His arms, chest, and neck are all covered in black and white designs. It originally started out on his left side, and eventually expanded to the full upper part of his body.

The left side of his chest has a cross on it, to represent his faith, encased in Polynesian and tribal symbols. Those represent his life, heritage, and growth outside of fighting, according to his Instagram.

Is He Single?

Yes, Kamu is currently single. He told Parade, “I don’t want to do anything that’s gonna get in between me and my first love, which is winning. So first and foremost, I got to make sure I keep my eyes on the prize. And if I make some good connections in the house, then we can explore those after the game. Showmances are dangerous because immediately two people are seen as a pair, right? They’re seen as one, they’re going to vote the same way, and their loyalties with each other are always going to be stronger than their loyalties to their alliances, typically. So I want to make sure that I avoid that. I don’t want to paint any unnecessary targets on my back.”
