I wish I could believe that on Days of Our Lives, Dr. Rolf meant it when he said he was done with resurrecting people and turned off the power to his latest experiments.
The most charitable way to look at this practically pointless Lexie storyline and Rolf’s decision to retire from raising the dead afterward is to assume that the writers wanted to put a cap on this overused trope, ending it for once and for all.
Sadly, I know too much about how Salem works to believe that, and certain events within the episode suggest that this is a pie-crust promise that will be broken quickly.
The Final Scene Felt Like a Wink To The Audience
Days of Our Lives‘ Dr. Rolf supposedly cut the power to three pods containing bodies in suspended animation, lamenting that he wished he didn’t have to say goodbye.
Come on!
Rolf didn’t destroy the pods; he only turned out the lights in the pod room, which supposedly meant he cut the power.
Afterward, the camera focused on the pods, and I was shocked that we didn’t get a glimpse of somebody opening their eyes.
That type of camera work usually means that things aren’t as they seem.
Sooner or later, someone is going to emerge from one of those pods or show up in Salem without any explanation or memory of how they got there.
That doesn’t necessarily mean Rolf himself will resurrect the person. Someone could intercept the pod or get a hold of his notes.
But make no mistake about it: whether it’s months or years in the future, one of those pod people will be resurrected — and depending on who the writing team is at the time, Rolf’s promise will either be forgotten or viewed as a betrayal by EJ.
There’s An In-Character Explanation for Rolf’s False Promise
EJ was furious with Rolf, and no one takes vengeance like EJ DiMera — not even when the other person has been loyal to the DiMeras for years.
As far as EJ was concerned, Rolf was responsible for Lexie’s new death. He accused Rolf of “overestimating his genius” and cruelly taking Lexie from her family.
Of course, Lexie was dead before all of this happened, and EJ was the one who ordered her resurrected, but EJ doesn’t ever let himself get hung up on those kinds of details.
Anyway, Rolf’s heartfelt insistence that his life’s work was over and that he would never achieve the cure for death he dreamed of could have been a way to appease EJ so that Rolf wouldn’t need to give himself the immortality drug.
This entire story never made any sense to begin with because Rolf already had an immortality injection that successfully resurrected several people, including EJ himself!
Days of Our Lives has not given us any explanation for why Rolf couldn’t use the old formula on Lexie.
It’s like we’re supposed to forget it existed and completely buy that since this version didn’t work, Rolf had failed forever at resurrecting people.
Even If That Were True, What Was With That Scene In The Hospital?
In between Rolf’s claim that he was done and the infamous pod scene, he sneaked into the hospital and took Lexie’s body away.
His face was recognizable despite wearing a surgeon’s mask, and EJ saw it too.
If Rolf was really done, what would be the point of that?
This seems an awful lot like that time when Kristen injected EJ’s body with a mysterious drug. It took about five years, but an alive EJ showed up eventually.
Lexie herself might show up again someday, although her latest visit was pointless enough that I hope not.
I’d bet, though, that Abigail returns sooner rather than later.
Her body has been missing from her grave since before Cat revealed her real identity, and anyway, Chad and Belle don’t seem built to last.
