Doc Season 3’s Trailer Asks Us to “Embrace the Mess” – We’re Embracing the Heart, Hope & Humanity, Too

Do good.

It’s a sentiment that so strongly links with Amy, especially in her quest to navigate who she is and how she approaches her career, her life, and her relationships on Doc. Hell, it’s also the type of vice Joan left her with after Doc Season 2.

And now, with this exciting trailer of the new season, Amy is taking that mantra to heart in practice!

Fall TV is right around the corner, and fortunately for us, Doc is one of the few brilliant offerings that will arrive in September as the TV gods always intended. September 22, to be exact!

As one of the most complex and compelling women on television, I cannot wait to dive into the next chapter of Amy Larsen’s story, and it appears that she’ll face even more challenges, but it also looks like we’ll be experiencing some wins along the way, too.

Our Doc Finale left us with Amy opting to focus almost exclusively on living up to Joan’s legacy and being the best version of herself.

In some ways, that may involve less overt romantic messiness, as it seems that both her most prominent suitors, Michael and Jake, are on different paths.

Michael is on a path toward finding himself and getting back into medicine in a way he always intended: hands-on, without being chained behind a desk.

And he’s also making peace with his romantic feelings for Amy and a failed marriage with Nora while figuring out how to be a decent father to the latest addition to his family.

Jake has had a renewed sense of connection with his ex-wife, Rachel, particularly after her virus scare. And things have stalled a bit between him and Amy in a way that still has their story feeling incomplete, but may mean the chapter is closed, just for now.

But Amy is throwing her all into this co-chief position with constant adversary, Sonya. Joan placed both women in charge in a controversial move that could either truly pay off or end in some type of disaster.

However, from a conflict perspective, it’ll be ripe for great content that will have us glued to the screen. Why? Because this time, instead of the two being at each other’s throats in petty ways, they actually have to work together for a greater good and broader purpose.

And in that sense, it can bring out the best in both of them at a time when what they have to offer is essential.

As co-chief residents, the two will have their hands full with a diverse batch of new interns who already have unique personalities, putting both women and the hospital to the test.

We’re trading in that convoluted Hannah revenge messiness for something more straightforward, and not entirely unlike Grey’s Anatomy: new interns, fresh faces, and genuine fun watching the best of the best have to mold new minds.

Amy’s seriousness about taking up the mantle and following in Joan’s footsteps is one of the most compelling angles to explore for her character’s arc, and it’s one I’m most excited about.

The series has added newcomers Cobra Kai’s Barrett Carnahan, Raffa Virago and Cecilia Lee from Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and Kolton Stewart from Heated Rivalry and My Life with the Walter Boys.

Carnahan will play Graham Barker, who is entitled, smooth, charming, and driven to prove that he’s more than just the nepo baby of one of the hospital’s wealthy donors.

Virago will play Nikki De Silva, who is described as wound tight: an overachiever, sharp, and quick-witted.

Lee will play Ruth Chen, who is empathetic, eager, and kind; she cheers the other interns on. Though she’s highly intelligent, she can get frazzled when she’s overwhelmed.

Stewart will play Kyle Ferguson, the youngest intern. He is brilliant and humble —a fish out of water because he was homeschooled. He is also direct, sincere, and guileless.

But, of course, the big news is that Doc Season 3 will have a new, messier romantic prospect who is also serving as an antagonist wrapped up in one.

Blair Underwood made his debut in the Doc Season 2 finale as Ben Grant, a world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon who truly came through when they needed him the most.

But the real shocker was learning that he and Amy had a past together, a very steamy, sexy, smoking hot past!

Of course, Amy doesn’t remember any of this, which is why the season’s tagline, ” Can Your Memories Be Trusted? is so delicious.

Now, Amy’s latest threat is Ben, who comes across as someone plotting, with ulterior motives we may not understand and a potential fixation on Amy.

The trailer teases that her healing journey is going remarkably well, and she’s making enough strides that she may not need to be under all these limitations and probations that have stood as obstacles in her way.

But Ben is daring to argue otherwise, with him speaking to the board and stating that Amy, in her current capacity, isn’t a draw for him. Yeah, but that’s not what you fawning over that sexy birthday video says, Sir!

Tensions seem to brew between Amy and Ben, as they may have vastly different styles of doing things and are set to clash on that front.

But she’s also having more and more memories of the two of them together, and she’s trying to make sense of their relationship, and also why he’s hiding things and lying.

We can hear her telling him that whatever he’s doing, however he’s treating her, it feels “personal.”

Yes, the trailer teases so much of that conflict and tension, and it’ll likely lean into that as a driving force of the season.

But what’s most refreshing and exciting about the trailer is that it feels like a course correction.

Doc is leaning into what it does best, why people tune into the series in the first place: Amy’s journey, the heart this show beautifully displays, the moving cases, and the showcasing of humanity, and that hopeful, second-chance vibe that’s most compelling.

It feels like an identity reset. Yes, there’s inevitably going to be some conflict and juicy drama, but Doc’s heart and soul not only remain intact, but are at the forefront.

“This is a calling for me; we’re going to find out if it’s a calling for you,” Amy tells her baby-faced interns.

“I’m not giving up this gift I have and what I can do with it for others,” we hear her saying, presumably under the guise of Ben’s mechanizations to take over.

Amy has a renewed sense of purpose that feels refreshing, inspiring, and like a journey that I most assuredly cannot wait to see her walk down.

We’ve spent two seasons watching Amy try to earn her second chance, and season three promises that she may actually get to live it in full now.
