Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Tamera Mowry-Housley on Gethsemane’s Evolution, the Growing Love Triangle & More

You know Fall has arrived when ghosts and their unfinished business come haunting.

That’s right. It’s time for the fourth film in the Haunted Harmony Mysteries franchise, featuring Irish charm, music, and murder all in one.

Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Prelude to a Wedding premieres on Saturday, September 5. Gethsemane agrees to play at the wedding and attend with Griff, but many old resentments simmer among the bridal party.

Before long, Gethsemane and Eaman discover a body, and chaos ensues at the wedding as they strive to solve the murder mystery. It’s Gethsemane at her finest.

TV Fanatic had the opportunity to chat with Tamera Mowry-Housley about how Gethsemane has evolved as an investigator, the romance in this film, and why fans enjoy this franchise.

It seems like more movies and series have murders at a wedding. What is it about weddings that always bring drama and old grudges to the forefront?

Whenever you have more than 50 people, people are going to be people. You’re going to have many different types of personalities and, whatever happens, it’s unlimited. Something’s going to go down.

What I love about this particular mystery is that you have many different clues. It’s not just three people. There are lots of characters, and each has their own little angle.

I love how Gethsemane dives right in there. She’s like, I know I’m here as a guest, and I don’t know you, but I’m going to ask some questions. She does it in a fun, quirky way, and it works.

 It does. And jumping off that, how do you think she has grown from an investigator in the first movie to this one now that we’re in the fourth film of the franchise?

Right. I feel like she is quicker to put her ideas together.

She is more confident, whereas she used to be a little more timid about getting involved in Detective O’Reilly’s work. She’s like, no, I know, I’m good at what I do, and I know I shouldn’t be here, but I’m gonna be here anyway.

You can see a level of confidence she maybe didn’t have before. She knows she’s good at it, and she knows Detective O’Reilly needs her and takes her advice and whatever she finds seriously.

The love triangle between Gethsemane, Griff, and O’Reilly is such a huge part of the franchise’s charm.

Thank you. I know in the beginning, especially with murder mysteries, you want to have that slow burn, especially if you have a love triangle.

Now, with the fourth film, I feel like the audience will enjoy seeing more of Griff, O’ Reilly, and Gethsemane spending time together and seeing which suitor is the best fit for Gethsemane.

Are we going to see her get closer to choosing Team Griff or Team O’Reilly?

In these, you can start to see it. It should be time pretty soon. Do you have a suitor in mind that you think you would like Gethsemane to be with?

I’ve always liked her with Griff.

Ah, okay. I can tell you, when I’m filming with Marco Grazzini, I feel Gethsemane’s connection with Griff. Then I’ll go and I’ll film with Adam Fergus, and I’m feeling O’Reilly. I don’t know.

I feel like after this one, Tamara Mowry Housley, playing Gethsemane, knows the person she would choose.

That is very interesting. Of course, Gethsemane and Eamon have one of the best dynamics in the franchise.

Yes. I feel it in their chemistry. Whenever Gethsemane and Eamon are together, it doesn’t matter what they’re doing. They make sure they’re there for each other. They’re protecting each other.

 I love that they express how much they love each other. They love working together. They have such beautiful chemistry that it really does make them joyous to watch.

It does. Do you think he has a favorite for his girl?

No, I’ve never asked that, but maybe we’ll do that in the fifth film.

Oh, is there another coming then?

I don’t know. I’m just saying maybe. It depends on whether you guys watch this one.

So many of the films feature unfinished business between family members. Why do you think that’s such an important theme to play?

 I feel this aspect of the murder mystery is what makes us different from all the others. I think every single human being can resonate with that.

It adds that emotional layer and makes us think and wonder: if we all had a chance, if we had unfinished business with a loved one who has passed on, what would we say?

And in knowing how that feels, you want to make sure, in the best of your ability, that you don’t have unfinished business, that you tell your loved ones, um, you love them now.

And there’s also a sense of peace knowing where they are, that they’re okay, and that things were resolved.

 It’s such a beautiful message. Gethsemane is performing at the wedding in this film. How much of your own musical background do you get to bring into this role, and do you personally play the violin?

I had absolutely zero musical ability or instrumental talent. My instrument is my voice. I sing, but I’ve never played. But I learned how to play the violin, being inspired by Gethsemane.

So in the beginning, when you see me playing at the wedding, that’s really me playing the violin. So I learned how to play. I learned how to play about half of the song on the violin.

That is very inspiring. For our final question, what do you think the fans will like most about this Haunted Harmony Mysteries film?

This is what’s so beautiful about the Haunted Harmony Mysteries. I feel like you can watch each one individually because they’re the same but different. Each one has its own kind of vibe.

I don’t know how we did that, but we did. Each one has all the elements you love about the movies, but it’s still different.

This one, to me, feels a little more eerie. There are a few more jump scares, but it’s still light. You have more of the love triangle with Griff and Gethsemane, and Detective O’Reilly.

While I love all of them, this one sticks out visually even though it takes place in one spot; visually, the cinematography and lighting are stunning. The inn is warm and cozy, and the lighthouse was gorgeous. 

The fourth Haunted Harmony Mystery, Prelude to a Wedding, airs Saturday, September 5 at 8/7c on The Hallmark Channel and the next day on Hallmark +.
