Hayden Panettiere, the talented beauty who has graced our screens in hit series such as Heroes and Nashville, has passed away at the young age of 36.
We’ve lost another talented performer, and the world feels a little dimmer without her.
Save the cheerleader, save the world,” it’s one of Heroes’ most iconic lines, one that still carries some weight and conjures up the magic of an incredible genre series that took television by storm.
And it’s that iconic role as Claire Bennett that seemingly put Panettiere on the map and made her a household name.
But for many, we’ve known that bright face for much longer. Her early days were spent acting on soap operas such as One Life to Live and Guiding Light.
She was a Disney kid, after all, one who cut her teeth in the various television films that used to air on the Disney Channel in its prime.
From there, her career continued to take off, from voiceover work in massive films like A Bug’s Life to starring alongside many coveted names: Viola Davis, the late, great Michelle Trachtenberg, Kate Hudson, Abigail Spencer, Bill Pullman, and so many more.
The list goes on, really.
With incredible talent and range, Panettiere has appeared in her share of films and television throughout her life.
Effervescent and able to steal the screen whenever she was in it, sure, most can’t even choose one project of hers that they loved most.
Remember the Titans. Scream. To recall everything she’s been in would be nearly impossible.
Panettiere’s versatility led to an impressive career. She could make you laugh in a comedy every bit as much as make you cry or make your hair stand on end in a drama.
While Heroes is likely one of her most iconic roles imaginable, I personally had a soft spot for Nashville.
Because, of course, she wasn’t just gifted as an actress but as a singer as well.
Panettiere’s portrayal of Juliette Barnes still sticks with me long after Nashville came to an end.
A troubled, complex young woman trying to maintain a career in an industry that tends to grind the life out of people — Panettiere brought such rich depth, layers, and beauty to the role.
Television doesn’t always afford women of any age the chance to be flawed, complicated, vulnerable, strong, and just so viscerally human.
And yet, that’s what Juliette Barnes was and what Hayden brought to the role.
Much of that is because of the vulnerability she herself brought to the world. She was an activist, an advocate, and a mother.
Hayden was open about mental health, postpartum depression, and destigmatizing mental health surrounding motherhood.
She was also vocal about previous struggles with substance abuse, with grief after the tragic, unexpected loss of her brother in 2023 to a heart condition, and the struggles of navigating privacy while in the limelight.
In many ways, Hayden was an open book who gave us so much of herself, whether through her performances, her music, or her vulnerability and honesty in her words.
It’s rare to find such authenticity.
According to her representative, Hayden Panettiere passed away Sunday, August 17.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her ― and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” her representative said.
Her cause of death has not been released, but she leaves behind a daughter, Kaya, friends, family, and legions of devoted fans who will mourn her loss and what she brought to this world.
May she rest peacefully.
