Elsbeth Season 3 Episode 19 ended Kaya’s undercover story before letting her work with Elsbeth on a case that was eerily similar to the one she’d just finished.
She said she was back for now, but it better be for the rest of the season!
Kaya and Elsbeth Are Too Good Together to Lose Again
Nothing against the other detectives, but they just don’t fit the way Kaya does.
And Elsbeth Season 3 Episode 19 gave us a break from the never-ending rotation of other detectives. I didn’t realize how much I missed Kaya until her return.
She just gets Elsbeth. She doesn’t question her theories or act like Elsbeth can’t possibly be right.
None of the other detectives can do that. Their role seems to be trying to convince Wagner that Elsbeth is wrong, even when she isn’t.
I can’t point to a specific example, other than the fact that they fell so naturally into staying up late and watching reality TV together at the end of the episode.
Still, something felt different about Elsbeth when she interacted with Kaya.
The Case Was Yet Another Example of Wealthy People Behaving Badly
The idea of a wealth therapist who helps rich people accept their privileged status was interesting, even if it isn’t something most people can relate to.

The beginning of the hour, before the murder, felt like satire, with one patient reluctantly admitting how bad it felt that a servant called her by her first name on a yacht that she had recently bought.
I was surprised that the therapist turned out to be the killer instead of the victim, though.
The fight with her patient seemed to be leading up to him killing her because she used information he shared with her to make insider trades that netted her millions.
It wasn’t until the cops identified the body that I realized it was Jason underneath the helmet and not this therapist.
I guess it made for a better story this way, but I am curious what would have happened if she had been the one who died instead of bringing even more shame to the therapy profession than she already had.
I’m especially sensitive to stories about evil therapists or those who take advantage of patients because the industry is so maligned on television.
The installment didn’t caricaturize therapy itself the way many television shows did — it just lampooned the reason these people were seeking help. What a relief!
That therapist certainly was good at putting on a professional face, though. Even when the cops came to arrest her, she acted like everything was fine.
I had to laugh at her complaint that they kept interrupting her sessions.
One of my pet peeves is that police procedurals are constantly interrupting therapy sessions, fancy dinners, and other activities to arrest someone.

Law & Order started that trend back in the 1990s, and it’s never gone away, so I’m glad that the hour mocked it.
I also cracked up at Elsbeth’s comment that there seems to be something crazy going on every week.
I love meta humor when it’s done well, and Elsbeth should focus more on that and less on absurd situations.
It was also fun when Kaya and Elsbeth sat down on the therapist’s couch as if they’d booked a session.
The woman clearly hadn’t thought this crime through as much as she thought she had. She’d never planned for someone like Elsbeth to get wind of what she was up to.
Her Sherlock Holmes routine was weird, but I guess it was meant to intimidate Elsbeth, or maybe to demonstrate that she could infer stock trades from what clients said during sessions.
Still, We Have To Ask…
What the heck is up with Elsbeth Season 3 and these high-society crimes?
Elsbeth often gets giddy over hanging out with high-society types despite the fact that every single one of them turns out to be a criminal.
I don’t get the appeal, and I don’t remember past seasons focusing quite so much on this class of criminal. It’s a relatively new development, and one that I’m not entirely sure that I like.
I especially dislike Elsbeth being like a silly schoolgirl whenever she’s around this type of person.
It seems ridiculous and beneath her. If this is supposed to be a running gag, it has long since worn out its welcome.
Or at least I think so. What about you, Elsbeth Fanatics?
