When it comes to emotional trauma, Grey’s Anatomy knows how to dump us in it.
Sure, it’s not just reserved for season finales, but you can count on finales to deliver solid punches in the form of the most significant disasters.
Whether it’s a storm wiping out power or a major plane crash, Grey’s has taught us that when it’s finale time, not even our favorite characters get a free pass. Be afraid; be very afraid.

There have been six “disaster finales” throughout Grey’s Anatomy’s run so far.
If you want to go for the guts and revisit every major event that has put lives on the line, then you’ll want to check out Grey’s Anatomy Season 6 first, and move on to Grey’s Anatomy Season 8, Grey’s Anatomy Season 9, Grey’s Anatomy Season 13, Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, and Grey’s Anatomy Season 22.
I’m also considering the emotional impact — not just the event itself but also whether the characters suffered significantly in the aftermath.
6. The Bridge Collapse with No Real Trauma

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22’s finale featured a bridge collapse that threatened the lives of Owen Hunt and Nick Marsh.
While there was an emotional impact for Meredith, it wasn’t quite as heavy as we’ve seen in seasons past.
As for Owen, there was no emotional impact at all.
Sure, for a while, Teddy thought that Owen might have been trapped somewhere in the bridge collapse and badly injured. But we knew he was busy helping others who were trapped and just had broken phones.
Part of the problem is that we knew Owen and Teddy were getting ready to leave the series, and they had already been casually mentioning that they would probably ride off into the sunset together.
To be fair, we still don’t know what’s to come, as the aftermath is a way off, but I can’t imagine there will be much fallout.
5. A Hospital Explosion Wasted

The Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Finale left us wondering who would and could make it out alive.
There were a handful of characters outside, including Meredith, but everyone else was inside, raising the stakes for most of them. Our fear was amplified because at least three characters we deeply cared about were on the same floor as the explosion.
It wasn’t just about the doctors, though. There was also a young boy fighting for his life on the operating table. Nobody was going to leave him behind!
We had to wait until Grey’s Anatomy Season 22’s premiere to see how much emotional damage would be inflicted, but as it turns out, there wasn’t much at all.
The writers chickened out by killing off one supporting character instead of ripping favorites from our lives.
The story would have been more impactful had Grey’s taken a risk by killing off Link, Jules, or another character important to most of the cast.
4. A Fiery End to a Career

At the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 Episode 24, a young girl was taken hostage, and a fire broke out in the hospital.
They used this to instigate Ben Warren’s career change, setting up the spinoff, Station 19, but it was also a way to write out Stephanie.
After she put her own life on the line to save the young girl and suffered numerous burns as a result of her heroism, she realized that it was time to put herself first.
She didn’t want to work in a hospital anymore. And who could blame her? Not only was she a doctor and now a patient, but she grew up in the system because of her Sickle Cell Anemia.
It hurt losing Stephanie, who had grown into a capable resident with a lot of heart, especially when it came to finding a way to work with Jackson after he had hurt her deeply.
But when Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 rolled around, any emotional trauma was pretty much forgotten. The hospital needed to be rebuilt, but emotionally, everyone moved on pretty quickly, even with the physical clues of the disaster all around them.
3. The Storm That Knocked Out Power

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Episode 23 kicked up a terrifying storm that robbed the hospital of its power. What could be more frightening than experiencing the worst days of your life and not having faith that the hospital could care for you?
Generators were supposed to kick in, but the hurricane that hit Seattle was quite severe, and many people were in jeopardy.
Before the end of Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Episode 24, Meredith needed a C-section — and she had to rely on her skills as a teacher to talk her residents through the terrifying ordeal. She did her best but realized it wasn’t enough as she began to lose consciousness.
Then the basement flooded, electrocuting Webber and Mouse. It was absolutely insane how much that hurricane threatened our precious doctors.
We were left wondering whether Grey’s Anatomy would actually kill off an original character again, and there was a good amount trauma in the aftermath.
Even though Webber survived, he wasn’t sure that he wanted to live, and Meredith (who Bailey pulled through the rough night) made decisions so egregious to him that we wondered if their bond could ever be repaired.
2. A Shooting That Would Ricochet Into Future Seasons

Grey’s Anatomy Season 6 Episode 24 brought us a disaster of a much different nature.
While there had certainly been disaster arcs, nothing was as intense and heartbreaking as watching one man kill multiple people to avenge his wife’s death. This very human disaster just hit differently.
It’s impossible not to recall Bailey’s screams as she realized that she couldn’t get Percy to the OR to save him. Or feel Meredith’s fear as Cristina and Jackson devised a plan to trick Gary Clark into believing Derek had died so that he’d stop his rampage.
I struggled with whether this should be labeled as the series’ most traumatic until I really thought about how long the impact lasted.
Karev found it difficult to even get on an elevator again, and Lexie struggled mentally for a while. There was even the fear that they would all crumble on the spot when victims of a college shooting were brought in during Grey’s Anatomy Season 7.
Yet, the doctors mostly picked themselves up, brushed themselves off, and got back to work. It was nothing like losing two beloved characters in the most tragic Grey’s finale of all time.
1. A Plane Crash That Broke Our Hearts

The Grey’s Anatomy Season 8 Two-Part Finale broke our hearts, taking Lexie’s life in a heartbreaking scene. Then Sloan died on Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Episode 1, and Arizona lost her leg.
It felt like one blow after another. Even the insurance company refused to cover the loss because Arizona had taken Karev’s place. Eventually, the survivors came together to sue the hospital. It was a heartbreaking time and a sad statement on an industry built around serving others.
Tremors from that disaster have rocked the hospital ever since, and it was irrevocably changed, leading to a name change in honor of the survivors.
Cristina suffered a mental breakdown. Arizona had to relearn how to walk (and roller skate… what can we say?). This wasn’t a disaster of the week format. It has severe repercussions for a long time afterward, which is exactly what you’d expect after such a traumatic experience.

This was a turning point. Relationships changed, and they never really healed.
Cristina and Meredith are still the Twisted Sisters, but there was a chasm between them afterward that never fully refilled.
Now, every time we know a character is getting on a plane, we worry about them. Lightning can strike twice. Even worse, this affected our real-life idea of flying. Seeing a crash played out in such stunning detail changes you forever.
That’s the power of Grey’s Anatomy, my friends.
