It turns out the latest Stargate mission ended before anyone even stepped through the gate. Prime Video has pulled the plug on its planned TV reboot of the long-running sci-fi franchise.
According to Variety, Amazon has canceled its planned Stargate revival from writer, executive producer, and showrunner Martin Gero before the project could move beyond the early stages of development. The series was first announced in November 2025, but sources told the outlet that Amazon executives were concerned Gero’s vision would appeal primarily to existing Stargate fans rather than attract a broader audience.
No plot details were ever revealed for Gero’s version of the series, so it’s unclear how his take on Stargate would have differed from previous entries in the franchise. Gero was a writer on the original Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis.
The franchise originates from the 1994 feature film Stargate, starring James Spader and Kurt Russell, which then expanded into a sprawling television universe, currently owned by Amazon MGM Studios. The franchise includes the original film, the flagship series Stargate SG-1 that ran from 1997 until 2007, spinoff series Stargate Atlantis, the series Stargate Universe that ran from 2009 until 2011, web series prequel Stargate Origins, and two additional films.
Fans of the Stargate universe are up in arms over the decision, taking to social media to voice their frustration and rally support under the hashtag #SaveStargate, with many calling on Amazon to reconsider the cancellation and give the franchise another chance by passing around a petition to save the show.
Started by the Popcast Brothers, the petition mission statement attacks the argument that the show is too niche, stating: “It is up to us to convince executives at Amazon that creating a new show will have very little financial risk because the fandom is financially, emotionally and socially ready to support any new project that holds true to the canon of the franchise while harnessing the talent of show creator Martin Gero and to bring a new version of the show to today’s audiences.”
As of the writing of this article, the petition has almost 90,000 signatures.
Fans from around the world voiced their anger at the decision as viewers were encouraged to “join the storm” on social media. “99% of my entire X feed is people I’ve never seen being hurt by Amazon’s shelving of Martin Gero’s Stargate project. I’m so proud of this community. We ARE the broad audience,” wrote one fan.
“This is what Stargate taught us… No one is left behind! We’re having @martingero @bradtravelers and @BaronDestructo‘s backs. We trust them! If you want to do a good Stargate, that works, @AmazonMGMStudio. Let them cook,” wrote another. “We could quietly slip back under our rock @AmazonMGMStudio and lick our wounds, but that is not the Stargate fans’ way. We are going to fight to the last to get what you promised us. You choose the wrong fandom to mess with,” posted another.

Stars of Stargate appreciated the efforts and thanked the fanbase for their fury. “Hello, Stargate universe! I truly enjoyed my time as part of the Stargate Atlantis family. ‘Colonel Marshall Sumner.’ Many of the cast are still in my life to this day. That’s rare. This community is rare,” wrote actor Robert Patrick on X.
“No matter what happens. Come what may. I am so F….n proud of this fandom and how you all have come together. Stargate fans really are the best,” posted Michael Shanks, who played archaeologist Dr. Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1.
