Actor Derek Yates recently joined the cast of Days of Our Lives. Since then, the actor has talked about his role and other projects he’s involved with. While his part originally seemed brief, he has also recently hinted his days in Salem might not be over for now.
Derek Yates Initially Returned To Days Of Our Lives With The New Year
Yates joined the cast of Days of Our Lives back in mid-2024, playing the character of Kerry Youmans. The role was one of Yates’ bigger roles in the world of soaps, with him previously appearing in a 2021 episode of General Hospital.
As Kerry Youmans, Yates has the chance to play a more villainous character. Notably, the character is also caught up in a love triangle with Leo Stark and Javi Hernandez.
Finishing up his original run in 2024, the character also briefly returned during the start of the new year. However, in a conversation with The U.S. Sun, Yates himself discussed if there is more to see from the character.
Yates opened up, talking about his original start on the soap. As he noted, “Two episodes, that’s kind of what it was going to be. It was a love interest for one of the leads on the show. It didn’t work out, so my character is just gone. I get a call six months later and they’re like, ‘You’re coming back!’”
As the actor continued, “I found out I am a part of a new love triangle situation. Now it’s been revealed that I’m kind of a villain. We’re going to see how it wraps up here soon!”
Yates then revealed there might be for him on the soap. As he shared, “After I was done with my final day, the director did come up to me and say, ‘Don’t count yourself out yet.’ That’s all I can stay at the moment.”
Yates Even Thought Up A Possible Story For Kerry Youmans
The actor even suggested a possible storyline for the character. He teased, “Now that I have the shorter hair, it would be fun to come back. They’re already doing a twin thing so maybe not a twin thing, but maybe a twin thing.”
“I can come out as the same character and be like, the reformed version of my character. He cut his hair, seeks therapy, wants to be a good person, do better and be friends with Leo. It would be interesting to do that flip.”
While speaking with the publication, Yates also teased his other ventures. In addition to his work as an actor, he also works as a personal trainer. He is also heavily involved with various non-profit organization, like Project Angel Food and Locks of Love.
At this time, Yates admitted he doesn’t have much planned for the future. However, he hopes his role on the soap will lead to bigger things. He shared, “I was thankful to get all of these roles on Days of Our Lives. Now that we’re in the New Year, I am crossing my fingers that all this publicity from Days will help me push into the next project and you’ll see me in more stuff.”
