In his personal life, McDermott was married to Canadian actress and television personality Mary Jo Eustace, sharing one child together, from 1993 to 2006. Following this, he was married to American actress Tori Spelling from 2006 to 2025, with them sharing five children. Over the years, the two headlined a number of reality shows together, including Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood.

Recently, McDermott celebrated a huge milestone in his personal life. He announced that he had been clean and sober for three years, all while encouraging others stuck in addiction to seek help.
Fans Took To Social Media To Congratulate Dean On His Recent Share, With Some Sharing Stories Of Their Own
Taking to Instagram, McDermott called himself “Clean Dean,” wanting to tell people, “Hell has an exit.” As he shared, if he could do it, others can. However, he felt that people need to reach out to ask for help if they want to get clean.
As Dean captioned the post, “WOW we wee WOW!! 3 years!! Couldn’t have done it without my family, friends, fellowship, sponsor and a 12-step program!! It all started with surrendering and asking for help. The best decision I’ve ever made. If you’re struggling, reach out. I love you all.”

As noted by TMZ, Dean has dealt with substance issues for over a decade. He entered rehab back in 2014. However, he dove into his recovery in 2023 around the time he and Tori had split. As the outlet noted, the former couple recently reunited for their daughter Stella’s high school graduation, appearing to keep things civil.
Taking to the comments, many praised Dean for his recent milestone. Many had undergone similar sobriety journeys and shared their stories with him. Some comments included:
