Derek Hough is opening up about an unfortunate incident on his wedding day.
The Dancing With The Stars judge married professional dancer Hayley Erbert near the end of summer. And although the photographs from the day look absolutely stunning, the couple did reportedly have their share of hiccups.
Thankfully, it’s all in the past now and it doesn’t appear that anyone was severely injured. However, the situation could have quickly escalated if the couple didn’t act quickly.
What exactly happened?
Derek Hough’s wedding day almost went up in smoke
Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert have been living in marital bliss for the last several months. Recently, the happy couple decided to join Shawn Johnson and Andrew East for an episode of their podcast, Couple Things. Derek and Shawn competed on DWTS Season 15 together and finished in second place.
In the episode, the two couples discussed a wide range of topics. And of course, that included the big incident on the wedding day.
“There was a moment, I will say. You know, people always say, ‘Does something ever go wrong?’ And there was one thing. … The welcome party the first day, right before people showed up,” Derek started the story.
“We’re on a cliff on the ocean in this beautiful cabin. It’s a little chilly. … We’ve got this stone fireplace,” he remembered, adding that he lit the fireplace and then left the house. Hayley was inside getting ready for the special day. Sadly, no one noticed the chimney flue wasn’t open. The smoke had nowhere to go and quickly filled the entire cabin instead.
“It was pretty terrible,” Derek confessed. Luckily, they were able to get the situation under control and nothing more serious happened.
Derek and Hayley had their stunning wedding, surrounded by friends and family. Fortunately, it seems like the smoke incident was the worst thing that happened that day.
The couple chose to celebrate their union in nature
Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert planned their dream wedding in Monterey County, California in late August.
“We’re in a redwood forest, but we got married right in front of this mother tree that’s surrounded by all these smaller trees,” Hayley told PEOPLE at the time. “They drop all the seeds, and it plants kind of like an army of children to protect the mother. The symbolism of it was beautiful. We’re here, planting our seeds to grow our family.”
Their bridal party included many familiar faces, including Britt Stewart and Julianne Hough. Julianne’s ex-husband Brooks Laich even served as one of Derek’s groomsmen.
