Janai Norman announced her departure from Good Morning America‘s weekend edition earlier this year. However, she has since shared her criticisms of her former employer. In particular, she targeted former colleague Michael Strahan over a past interview with the network.
Janai Norman Announced Her Good Morning America Weekend Exit During A Broadcast Back In April
Norman worked at ABC News for around 15 years. Initially working as an intern, she soon became a weekend co-anchor, reporting across multiple network platforms.
Back in April, Norman announced on the air that she would be exiting the show. At the time, ABC had not renewed her contract.
Norman has since taken to social media to criticize her former employers, accusing them of becoming “complicit in upholding white supremacy.” In particular, she took aim at an interview in which GMA host Michael Strahan interviewed the parents of a deceased Mississippi teen, Nolan Wells.
Norman shared her critique in a video on X. As she wrote in a caption, “Let’s examine how the inherent trust news organizations place in law enforcement agencies ends up upholding white supremacy and sowing racial divisions.”
Norman Criticized The Questioning Of Nolan Wells’ Parents & Claimed That The Interview Ignored Important Content Concerning Mississippi’s History
In particular, Norman blasted Strahan over his questioning of Wells’ parents, whose son was found dead after a boating trip with friends, asking why their son would have voluntarily stayed behind on Horn Island.
Norman shared, “Bless Michael, ’cause he had it right the first time.” She continued, “The question should have been, ‘Do you believe that?’ Not asking these grieving parents to defend a decision that we don’t even know for certain their deceased son made.”

Norman continued, “That was not an objective question. Subjectively, I would say that it was insensitive.” As she continued, she transitioned from criticizing Strahan himself to the outlet in general, saying that it was placing too much trust in law enforcement.
Norman expressed, “Many news organizations haven’t yet learned that they cannot always trust law enforcement as primary sources of credible information, and that is what plays into racial divisions.” Highlighting the “historical context of Mississippi — the state with the most recorded lynchings in history,” she continued, “By ignoring that context, news organizations become complicit in upholding white supremacy and, whether intentionally or unintentionally, end up playing into racial divisions.”
