Former Bringing Up Bates stars Kelly Jo and Gil Bates are sharing a devastating health update and need all the prayers they can get. They usually have a new grandchild to celebrate, but not this time. So, what’s wrong? Keep reading for all of the scary details.
Kelly Jo & Gil Bates Need Prayers
For years, the Bringing Up Bates cast has shared family updates and the births of grandchildren. There have been health scares and heartbreaks, but they have all remained fairly optimistic. Now, Kelly Jo and Gil Bates are back with a major update, and it is not good. The couple has been married almost forty years and share nineteen children. They are widely known for their UPtv reality series, which ended in 2022 after ten seasons, and have been compared to the Duggars.
The couple just took to social media to share a big update on Gil’s health. He had been feeling off for a while, mostly in his chest, and finally sought medical attention:
- On Mon night, after finishing a tree job & mowing several yards, he decided to drive to the ER, thinking they’d do some blood work & send him home. Instead, he was quickly whisked into a room & was told he was having a mild heart attack.
Gil Bates ended up having a stent put in the RCA artery, as it was 95% blocked. In the update, the couple added:
- The doctor said Gil had been a “ticking time bomb” & he was extremely close to having a major heart attack!
Fortunately, he was able to come home, and they have appreciated all of the prayers. They are just so grateful he is okay and that this was not worse.
Immediately, the prayers flowed in, and they were reminded of the couple’s daughter, Erin Bates Paine. She got severely ill after having her seventh child, and it was a question of whether she would recover. Erin defied the odds, as has her father.

Bringing Up Bates fans sent love and prayers right over to Kelly Jo and Gil Bates for a speedy recovery. Finally, they hated to see that he was sick but knew he had the fighting spirit right inside:
