Is ‘Tokyo Vice’ Coming Back For Season 2?

TV Shows

Based on the 2009 memoir by real-life investigative journalist Jake Adelstein, Tokyo Vice is a crime-drama series that spans the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st.

Season 1 premiered on April 7, 2022, on HBO Max and wrapped up its run on April 28, 2022. The first season comprised eight episodes and now people are wondering whether it might eventually be coming back.

It’s not easy to tell just what shows are going to get multiple seasons on HBO Max. Like Netflix, the shows on the network don’t usually get rating numbers. The streamer can also be tight-lipped as to why it renews one show. Likewise when it cancels one.

Is Tokyo Vice Coming Back For Season 2

The HBO Max show revolves around Jake Adelstein, an American expatriate from Columbia, Missouri, who moves to Tokyo, Japan, to enroll in the prestigious Sophia University. He does this before joining the Meicho Shimbun, a fictional Japanese-language newspaper. Once he’s able to join that staff, he’ll be a full-fledged reporter.

Soon enough, he becomes exposed to the various facets of the famed Kabukichō district. That includes the criminal organization, yakuza.

So is Adelstein going to be coming back? Will his adventure continue? It’s not entirely clear.

Following its release, the show received mostly positive reviews. The fact that the pilot episode was directed by none other Michael Mann.

Tokyo Vice drew much praise for its gripping, layered narrative and the constant presence of dread in each of its episodes. With the first season having concluded recently it would make sense that a Season 2 is coming.

Neither the series producers nor HBO executives have confirmed the development of a second installment yet.

However, many people involved with the project have voiced their hopes for a return. Series creator J. T. Rogers stated recently that if the show got greenlit for another season, much more of the story is already prepared to be told.

They spent the first season establishing Jake as a fish-out-of-water character. Tokyo Vice Season 2 might see him feeling a bit more comfortable.

Introducing New Characters

According to the Cinemaholic, showrunners are wanting to introduce new characters in subsequent seasons. It’s also worth pointing out that one of the first scenes of the show has not been revisited.

The first season started in 2001 and then actually jumped back two years. It then progressed from there so there is plenty of room for story.

Now there just needs to be some indication there’s a need for more story. It should be pointed out that HBO generally doesn’t drag its feet. It doesn’t seem like a particularly good sign for Tokyo Vice Season 2 that it hasn’t been confirmed yet. That doesn’t mean it’s dead, but it might be on life support.
