Kelly Clarkson Shares NYC Store Story Just Like ‘Pretty Woman’

Kelly Clarkson has shared a lot about her life over the years. This wasn’t just on her namesake talk show or on reality television, either. Recently, the star shared an incident that brought to mind a famous 1990s Cinderella story. This also inspired a few fans to share a few stories of their own.

Kelly Clarkson Recently Shared A Story In New York City, Where She Moved In 2023

Clarkson first rose to fame as the inaugural winner of American Idol‘s first season. Since then, she has had a successful career in music, becoming a coach on The Voice.

In recent years, Clarkson also became known for hosting her syndicated talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show. Making its debut in 2019, the series recently wrapped up this past August. However, that doesn’t mean Clarkson doesn’t still have stories to share with fans.

The singer shared a story on X. She claimed that she recently went to a New York City store, where she didn’t get the best treatment from the staff.

Clarkson shared, “Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy.” She then shared that she “literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me.”

The American Idol Star Sarcastically Advised Fans To Check Out The Store

Clarkson continued, “Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale.” Namedropping the store, “Art of Play,” she also told fans, “If you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts’ character in Pretty Woman… For sure, check it out.”

In the famous 1990s rom-com, Julia Roberts’ character Vivian goes to a high-end clothing store, only for the salesperson to refuse to show her more expensive items. Later, after she is helped to get nicer clothes for a night on the town, she returns to the store. Initially not recognized, she also asks the salesperson who refused to help her if she works on commission. When told that she does, Vivian famously quotes, “Big mistake. Big. Huge.”

With Clarkson’s recent share, many have been reacting to the story. While some felt sympathy for the store, many felt they were being unprofessional regardless of who the client was. A few have also been sharing similar stories of their own. Some comments included:

  • “People saying ‘maybe he didn’t know who Kelly Clarkson was’ are missing the point that they should be treating their customers like everyone is Kelly Clarkson.”
  • “People are missing the entire point. The point isn’t that the sales person should have recognized Kelly. The point is, he shouldn’t be judging anyone based on their appearance. You don’t have to be dressed up in Gucci to get help at a store.”
  • “Mr Saks, Saks’Fifth Av, used to dress like a bum and go to his stores and see who would wait on him. Those that ignored him got fired. Those who treated him as a customer got a bonus or promotion. That was the 50’s and sales were commission based.”
  • “You REALLY have to be on the wrong side if Kelly Clarkson is calling you out. She’s one of the least problematic celebs in Hollywood.”
