Matthew McConaughey Plays The Title Character In The Rivals Of Amziah King
McConaughey is an actor known for a variety of films. These include Dazed and Confused, The Lincoln Lawyer, Dallas Buyers Club, Magic Mike, True Detective, and Interstellar.
Recently, McConaughey appeared on Today to discuss his role in the new thriller, The Rivals of Amziah King, which officially released in the United States on August 14, 2026. In the film, he plays the title character, who reunites with his former foster child, Kateri.
In the story, McConaughey’s character works in the cut-throat honey industry, requiring him to film scenes with bees. A week before production, however, the actor learned that he was allergic to bees after having a strong reaction to a sting.
During his appearance on the show, a photo appeared of McConaughey after the sting. At the moment, one of his eyes appeared to be swollen shut. Having a sense of humor about the situation, however, he joked, “Yeah, you could call that allergic, couldn’t you?”
A Scene In Which McConaughey Worked With Bees Ended Up Having To Be Delayed To The Last Day Of Shooting
McConaughey shared that he was also working with real bees during the film and not CGI. He shared that, after learning about his allergies, it was decided that a scene in which he handled a queen bee would be saved for the last day of shooting to prevent any issues delaying the production.
Of course, McConaughey had some lighter moments to discuss about the film. Craig Melvin, who was interviewing McConaughey at the time, noted that his character showed off quite a few talents in the film. Saying that the film was something of a musical, McConaughey’s character could be seen performing in a band. McConaughey, explaining that the film was something of a diegetic musical, said that music was practically a language of its own for the characters.
The moment was later shared on Today‘s Instagram page. Since then, fans have been sharing their own stories of dealing with allergies. Others thanked McConaughey for being willing to tell his story, all with good humor. Some comments included:
