Morgan Freeman just released a new project in an unexpected career switch-up at 89.
On August 7, the Million Dollar Baby actor launched an EP, Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience, which he produced and narrated through Decca Records. The 12-track album featured collaborations with Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’ Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell, Shemekia Copeland, and the Chineke! Orchestra.
The first single, “Death Letter Blues,” was released on Juneteenth.
“I heard the blues for the first time on my grandmother’s porch in the Mississippi Delta, and it has never left me,” Freeman said in a statement, per Rolling Stone. “Having Taj Mahal kick off this album with a cover of Son House’s classic ‘Death Letter Blues’ strikes the perfect tone for the introduction of this album.”
He added, “Releasing this on Juneteenth is not just symbolic — it is the truth of where this music comes from and who made it. I hope people listen and remember.”
Additionally, Freeman set a short tour for the album that kicked off on August 7 in Houston. His other shows will be on September 26 in Memphis and October 17 in Gulfport, Mississippi.
“The blues. It’s come from the most basic, visceral expression of humanity,” Freeman said during a 2025 interview with CBS Mornings. “It comes from a field holler. African Americans, those people whose closer connected to the origins in Africa, they have their own way of working and it’s a rhythm thing.”
Freeman is best known for his film roles in Driving Miss Daisy (1989), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Seven (1995), and Million Dollar Baby (2004). Currently, he is starring in Taylor Sheridan‘s Lioness.
